Building an inclusive culture
Amazon has always been, and always will be, committed to diversity and inclusion. We seek builders from all backgrounds to join our teams, and we encourage our employees to bring their authentic, original, and best selves to work. Amazon’s mission is “To be earth’s most customer-centric company” and this mission is central to our work in diversity and inclusion. Diverse and inclusive teams have a positive impact on our products and services and help us better serve customers, selling partners, employees and community stakeholders from every background.
Amazon’s culture of inclusion is reinforced within our 14 Leadership Principles, which remind team members to seek diverse perspectives, learn and be curious, and earn trust.
To support building our inclusive culture, Amazon’s affinity groups lead in community-building, mentorship, and programs to build awareness around customer inclusion.
In ANZ, we have well-established affinity groups including
- [email protected] - committed to attracting, developing and retaining women in both tech and non-tech roles across all of Amazon's businesses; and
- Glamazon - mentoring employees (LGBTQ and allies) and promoting diversity and visibility in recruiting and throughout Amazon.
With executive and company sponsorship, these groups play an important role in building internal networks for creating a community, advising Amazon business units, leading in service projects, and reaching out to communities where Amazonians live and work.
In ANZ, Amazon was the headline sponsor for the ‘Women in Tech’ conference in Sydney in September 2018 and regularly participates in a number of Women in Technology initiatives across Australia.
We are proud to host Code-Like-a-Girl school holiday workshops for primary and high school-aged girls, and have sponsored the Girl Geeks Hackathon and #SheHacks 2018.
AWS recently held the inaugural SheBuilds AWS Community Days in Sydney and Melbourne sharing diversity of thought and inclusion in the tech space with a showcase of extraordinary female leaders with technical deep dive sessions, a fireside chat and a networking lunch.
We also provide our Amazonian women with regular opportunities for skill-building, networking, wellness, support and mentoring opportunities through our [email protected] affinity group.
For Amazon Web Services, it is always Day 1 and we are constantly striving to do more in recruiting and retaining diverse talent. We are very excited to be partnering with WORK180!

Amazon Web Services and ‘We Power Tech’
We Power Tech is the AWS diversity and inclusion outreach program launched in 2017 aimed to increase the number of AWS technologists from underrepresented groups. The program works with diversity focused organizations and spans K-12 to working professionals globally ensuring there is a pipeline of tech talent that is as diverse as our world. Since then, we have trained hundreds of new technologists through our Underrepresented in Tech series.
In ANZ, we hosted our first ‘We Power Tech’ event in Sydney on International Women’s Day 2018. We also featured a ‘We Power Tech’ Panel Discussion as part of the Innovation Day during the Sydney Summit covering topics related to Gender, Sexual Orientation, Culture/Race, Disability, and Veteran Status.
"Amazon has always been, and always will be, committed to diversity and inclusion. At Amazon, we proactively create forums to enable Amazonians to seek out and share diverse perspectives. One of these forums in ANZ is our [email protected] affinity group, giving Amazonians a say in shaping their work environment. The [email protected] ANZ affinity group is supported by our ANZ Diversity and Inclusion leadership committee, and provides critical inputs and insights about where the company should focus its diversity efforts – from how we attract and hire, in retaining and developing Amazonians and our thought leadership in the ANZ community." Michelle Hardie, President of [email protected] (ANZ Chapter) & Enterprise Business Development Manager, AWS
