Here in the Perception Team within the Applied Sciences Lab, we focus on the latest cutting-edge research in Deep Learning, Computer Vision, and Audio Processing. In this project, in particular, we are mainly focusing on incorporating neuro-symbolic methods for visual reasoning and understanding which aim at combining symbolic reasoning techniques with classical deep learning models to achieve a higher level of generalization and compositionality for AI systems.


Interns put inquiry and theory into practice. Alongside fellow doctoral candidates and some of the world’s best researchers, interns learn, collaborate, and network for life. Interns not only advance their own careers, but they also contribute to exciting research and development strides. During the 12-week internship, students are paired with mentors and expected to collaborate with other interns and researchers, present findings, and contribute to the vibrant life of the community. Research internships are available in all areas of research, and are offered year-round, though they typically begin in the summer.

In addition, the prospective interns are expected to present the findings of their research project at the end of the 12-week internship to our bigger team. Furthermore, the main deliverables expected for this project are (a) a well-written, academic white paper stating and demonstrating the technical contributions of the project, submit-able to top-tier Machine Learning and Computer Vision conferences, and (b) a well-documented code base containing the implementation of the contributed methods, models, and experiments during the project.


In addition to the qualifications below, you’ll need to submit a minimum of two reference letters for this position. Required Qualifications

  • Must be either currently enrolled in a PhD program OR already have a PhD degree in Machine Learning or a related Math, Statistics, or Computer Science field.
  • Must have at least 1 year of experience with deep learning for computer vision OR deep learning for natural language processing OR deep learning for neuro-symbolic reasoning.
  • Must be fluent in developing deep learning frameworks in Pytorch with at least 1 year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, cross-group, and cross-culture collaboration.
  • Ability to think unconventionally to derive creative and innovative solutions.
  • A demonstrated research track in neuro-symbolic methods, visual reasoning, or related topics. In particular, must have publications in any of those topics in top-tier machine learning and computer vision conferences.
  • A well-established understanding of classical computer science, algorithms, and symbolic computing.
  • Long-term experience with a conventional programming language such as C/C++/C#/Java as well as Python.
  • Good writing and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Tensorflow.
