Your new role

The role of the Senior Legal Counsel (Employment) is to act as a trusted advisor to the Fund's People & Culture Group, to provide legal advice on all aspects of employment law and to assist the Legal Department in managing legal risk within the Fund.

You will provide high quality, strategic and commercially focused legal advice on employment law matters including employee engagements and contracts, enterprise agreement negotiations, employer obligations, legislative/regulatory changes, disputes (including litigated matters) and terminations.

Your key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and reviewing standard employment contracts and other precedent documents to assist the Fund.
  • Assisting with the review and development of policies and procedures.
  • Researching legal questions and matters and providing legal advice in an easily understood format.
  • Researching and interpreting legislation and case law affecting the organisation and ensuring that stakeholders are informed of new or proposed legislation and policy.
  • Developing and providing training on legal issues in the areas of employment law and employee relations as required.
  • Assisting with the resolution of employment related disputes, including attending mediations and conciliations at the Fair Work Commission and other Tribunals/Courts.
  • Managing matters briefed to external lawyers and presenting external legal advice to the business with a commercial lens.

What you'll need

  • Bachelor of Laws or equivalent law degree (Mandatory)
  • Current Victorian legal Practicing Certificate or eligible to be admitted to practice law in Victoria (Mandatory).
  • Minimum of 10 years' post qualification experience (PQE).
  • Experience in employment law gained at a large law firm, specialist employment law firm or a reputable in-house legal team.
  • Ability to work autonomously and proactively and to set own work plan in order to meet deadlines.
  • Superior interpersonal skills.
  • Superior drafting, negotiating and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Superior organisational skills and ability to prioritise and concurrently manage a range of matters.
  • Ability to resolve internal escalations.
  • Ability to provide commercially focused legal support.
  • Excellent legal research skills.
  • In-house legal experience, equivalent to a senior associate level would be highly desired
