Purpose

An opportunity exists for a highly motivated professional to fill the role of Principal Mining Engineer supporting the Oak Dam Investment Opportunity within the Olympic Dam Planning and Technical team.

The Principal Mining Engineer will provide leadership across mine planning studies for Oak Dam, informing future investment decisions, underpinned by BHP’s sustainability values and commitments to safety.

Oak Dam is a potential greenfield mining project, located approximately 65 km south-east of Olympic Dam mine in northern South Australia. On-ground advanced exploration works are planned to increase substantially in the near future and an Identification Phase Study (IPS) will start soon with the intent to select options to extract the orebody. The Principal Mining Engineer will lead mine planning packages of work associated with the IPS and will also have substantial interface with the Land Access and Approvals (LAA) and Environment functions supporting the required regulatory approvals for the Oak Dam Studies and Underground Access Project (OKDUGA). Key responsibilities include development and delivery of mine planning options with different mining methods, strategy trade-offs and support in strategic decisions for the project.

In this role, you will be central in shaping the future of Oak Dam exploration target through optimisation of strategic mine plans, adoption of technology, and development of underpinning assumptions and risks to the project.

About the Role

In this role, you will:

  • Lead mine planning scenarios and trade-offs to unlock value at Oak Dam.
  • Focus on understanding and supporting mine planning continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Communication of key insights to mine, asset, and executive leadership teams.
  • Drive change through clear and regular communication, verbal and written with managers and general managers.
  • Promote mine planning as the vehicle that supports, collates, and drives forward all technical disciplines and asset optionality
  • Design and schedule different mining methods including sub-level open stoping and caving.
  • Work collaboratively within planning and technical to apply specialist mining knowledge to solving complex problems.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement.
  • Scan the industry and stay at the forefront of operational knowledge and technical excellence on strategic mine designs and innovative technologies.
  • Identify and communicate gaps between current mine planning practices and industry best practices.

This position is based in our Adelaide office on a Monday to Friday with flexible work arrangements.

About You

As a collaborative leader, you can shape the future of Oak Dam.

You will have:

  • Ideally a tertiary qualification in an engineering discipline (e.g. Civil/Mining/Geotechnical), however others, who have demonstrated experience in previous mine planning roles will be considered.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in mine planning and underground operations.
  • Expertise in underground hard rock mining operations, including materials handling across multiple mining methods. Some caving exposure, particularly design focused considered advantageous.
  • Mine planning experience in complex orebodies.
  • Strategic thinker with a reasonable understanding of valuation principles (costs, revenue etc).
  • Highly collaborative across functions (processing, geoscience, finance etc).
  • Excellent communicator, both written and in presentation.
  • Excellent time management skills with an ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Commercial acumen and demonstrated ability to understand business drivers.
  • A deep understanding of how mine planning inputs are integrated into business decisions.
  • Proficiency in Deswik (desirable).
