About the group/team

The Media Platform group is on a mission to build a platform that can process, store and distribute billions of images, videos, and audio efficiently. The Core Media team within the Media Platform group is responsible for the ingredients that are at the core of Canva experiences: images and fonts. We also manage the licensing of these ingredients in the Canva library to ensure users and contributors are benefited from our growing ecosystem.

Our team owns and operates some of the biggest scale services at Canva, dealing with billions of content, and unlocking other teams to ship their best features. This is also an exciting time to join Media Platform because we are building the next generation of the platform, including a multi-tier file system and a unified interface for ingredients.

About the role/specialty
You’ll coach and mentor other engineers to help them do their best work, while partnering with multi-functional leads to roadmap goals and milestones. You’ll be communicating with partners from outside the team to ensure project alignment and coordination. Code reviews will be what you do to ensure code is maintainable, well-tested, and well-architected.

What you’ll do (Responsibilities)

  • You will mentor and coach all engineers within the Core Media team, providing constant support and feedback with a human-focus approach.
  • You will provide technical guidance and mentoring for the team through design reviews and code reviews.
  • You will be accountable for the delivery of goals of the team. You are expected to be able to unblock engineers when blocked technically, via mentoring, connecting coachees to the right people, working to unblock Canva processes.
  • You will help drive a healthy engineering culture, including improving existing processes, encouraging learning and celebration, and balancing between shipping features vs reducing technical debts.
  • You will foster a culture of open communication and collaboration, bridging the communication gap between your teams and other teams at Canva.
  • Involved in hiring for growth - creating a team for the present and future needs of Canva
  • You will partner and maintain a relationship with key adjacent groups such as Creators, Editing, Search & Recommendation, and Ecosystem to unlock product initiatives.
  • You will drive annual and seasonal planning to develop a roadmap for the team, taking into account group strategy, customer needs as well as internal and external dependencies.
  • About you

  • Has strong coaching skills and interpersonal skills, has the ability to engage and motivate a team with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
  • Technical background - having worked in a platform team as an IC or managed a platform-focused team previously.
  • Worked with large-scale datastore such as AWS DynamoDB, S3, or equivalent.
  • Having a media (image, video, audio, font) background would be a bonus.
