Legal Counsel/Senior Legal Counsel

Location: Melbourne

Job Type: Not Specified

Who we are:

Netwealth is an ASX listed financial services and technology company providing astute investors, financial advisers, private clients and high net worth firms with a way to see wealth differently. We offer a range of innovative portfolio administration, superannuation, retirement, investment and Managed Account solutions through our award-winning platform. Currently rated Australia’s Number 1 Platform for overall functionality and satisfaction, we provide wealth professionals with the technology required to efficiently manage and add value to their wealth portfolios.

The role:

We have an opportunity for a Senior Legal Counsel (or an experienced Legal Counsel on the cusp of promotion) to join our team and help us continue on our remarkable journey. As a member of our small legal team, you will work in all aspects of the legal and regulatory requirements that come up the Netwealth Group. We work in a heavily regulated industry, and financial services regulatory experience is essential, but you won’t be pigeon-holed into a narrow specialisation. This role will expose you to the full range of legal issues that arise in our business, from data protection and privacy to statutory interpretation, to large transactions and general commercial law. You’ll be engaging with team members from across Netwealth on key strategic projects, as well as working on business-as-usual activities, such as advising on regulatory issues or negotiating contracts.

This role will offer great opportunities to develop and broaden your regulatory expertise, as you consider the broad range of regulation applicable to us and our suite of financial products and services (superannuation, IDPS, managed investment schemes, and custody). You’ll also be working closely with our Executives on strategic matters as we continue to grow and expand our services.

This is a great opportunity for a talented lawyer seeking to leave private practice for an in-house career (and the better work-life balance that typically involves), or someone who’s already made that change and is keen to work in an agile and collaborative organisation. This is a full-time role, however flexible working arrangements (eg varied work hours) may be considered. Netwealth embraces the flexibility of working from home, and staff are not required to be in the office full-time. Most of the Netwealth team is based in Melbourne and we’d love it if you were too, though we’ll consider other arrangements for the right candidate.

Some of your key responsibilities include:

  • Legal advice- Providing clear and concise legal advice to stakeholders on the complex and interesting legal and regulatory issues that arise in our business. Liaising with external legal providers as required.
  • Contract drafting- preparing clear, well-drafted documents for a variety of large and small transactions, in consultation with relevant business units, to enable Netwealth to appropriately manage risks and achieve commercial objectives, in keeping with regulatory requirements.
  • Negotiations- taking a lead role in negotiations with external parties to achieve the best commercial outcome for Netwealth.
  • Team projects- Assisting in improvement projects for the Legal, Risk and Compliance team and the wider business.
  • Business Support- Provision of training of legal issues to the business may be required from time to time. You may also contribute to business-wide projects from time to time.

We are different.

Discover a forward-thinking culture that incorporates values of Curious, Courageous, Collaborative, Agile, Genuine and Optimistic. Be part of an inclusive and diverse work environment where we offer professional and personal development opportunities that are aimed to help you be successful in your role whilst supporting your need for flexibility.

We’d love to hear from you if you have:

  • A degree in law and admission to legal practice in an Australian state or territory.
  • Experience in a mid- or top-tier law firm.
  • Experience (at least 4-6 years PAE) in advising on financial services regulation and/or superannuation law, particularly in relation to investment platforms.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal), for both providing legal advice and drafting documents.
  • Sound judgement and a result driven mindset.
  • Strong organisational skills, including the ability to manage matters.
  • Ability and confidence to work in a team or independently.
  • Sound problem solving and analytical skills.
  • A positive and proactive attitude and an ability to adapt to change.
  • A passion for providing outstanding service to your stakeholders.

What we offer you:

  • Interesting, varied work to keep you challenged and learning.
  • Flexible working arrangements and working from home.
  • Wellness and lifestyle offerings, as well as discounts on a variety of lifestyle and entertainment products and services.
  • Paid parental leave and the ability purchase additional annual leave.
  • Access to holiday programs for children.
  • Professional development opportunities
  • Social club and regular events.
  • Access to a range of benefits including a
    • competitive salary,
    • volunteer leave, and
    • recognition of service milestones and employee reward and recognition.
