About the role

Reporting to the Lead Wagon Engineer this role works closely with internal and external stakeholders to provide technical analysis and solutions such that Pacific National’s wagon fleet meet operational requirements for safety, performance, reliability, and life. This role’s overall purpose is to ensure all facets of standards and procedures, contract management, design, condition monitoring, programming, quality control, maintenance support, divisional networking, etc. are provided through an integrated approach. Location open to Newcastle/Sydney/Melbourne or Brisbane!

Working alongside the Lead Wagon Engineer and in a broader team of 9, the Wagon Engineer’s key responsibilities include:

  • Providing technical expertise and knowledge to determine the operational condition of the national Rollingstock such that the onset of equipment degradation / failure is identified.
  • Determining the best means of providing technical solutions to a variety of performance issues. Skills will include the ability to apply a high level of technical analysis and direction, as well as working closely with technical experts and suppliers.
  • In conjunction with other members of the Engineering Team, ensuring a thorough approach is taken to undertaking, recording and completing FMECA’s and RCA’s for all systems. Diagnostics are to be developed to permit maintainers to quickly identify root causes. Instigate, co-ordinate and facilitate investigations as required.
  • Ensuring a standardised approach is implemented for the analysis of wagon body structures. The outcome will ensure all load cases are understood, fatigue lives are accurately predicted, and inspection regimes are developed. The outcome will also ensure that reliable elements of the structure are defined in standards for new wagon designs.
  • Assist as SME in Incident investigations following identified incident, injury or near miss
  • Carry out audits of existing Standards and Procedures; scrutinise for where improvements are required, and revise where necessary in conjunction with other Engineering functions within Pacific National

About you

You will thrive in a busy working environment with the ability to manage multiple priorities. You will have demonstrated experienced developing strong stakeholder relationships with the ability to influence outcomes. This role requires a confident self-starter who can work autonomously and have confidence to make key decisions as required.

In addition, you will have:

  • Tertiary qualifications in Mechanical or Structural Engineering
  • Knowledge and experience in Rollingstock performance, terminal operations, and train operations, such that associated risks are understood and safety procedures are strictly applied
  • A knowledge of structures, fatigue, failure analysis, welding and other fabrication techniques, vehicle dynamics, design, rollingstock standards, and mechanics.
  • Planning, organizing, and directing resources in a dynamically changing environment, whilst communicating with multiple stakeholders.
  • Project management skills
  • Knowledge of Railway of Australia Standards and work in accordance with standards and procedures, achieve an auditable trail, recommend improvements, and assist with developing working practises.
  • Strong stakeholder management and communication skills are required to clearly articulate ideas and technical briefs.
  • A willingness to roll up your sleeves and work on site!
