About the role

As part of Thales Australia, Australian Munitions is the largest supplier of explosive ordnance to the Australian Defence Force, with a successful track record delivering ammunition, propellants, explosives and related services including acid production and industrial waste treatment to Defence and commercial markets.

The Senior Research & Development Engineer will provide support for the development of energetic materials for new products and the provision of support to resolve specialist technical issues at the Thales Mulwala and Benalla facilitates.


  • Perform laboratory, small scale/pilot plant operations and production trials with both energetic and non-energetic materials to support R&D development programs

  • Develop the feasibility of the technical solution including:

    • the adequacy of the solution in term of architecture and technology maturity with respect to solution requirements,

    • the consistency of the technical solution within the business’ strategy,

    • the feasibility with respect to cost, schedule, skills, resources and industrial organisation

  • Define the production aspects of the technical solution in terms of Manufacturability, Maintainability, Consistency between Non-Recurring & Recurring/Production costs.

About You

  • Degree qualified engineer or scientist or demonstrated equivalent experience

  • Experience working in a manufacturing, design or related industry in a professional role, or to be able to demonstrate a sound technical understanding of engineering solutions

  • Sound conceptual and analytical skills; root cause analysis and investigation skills

  • Knowledge and experience in Solid Rocket motors, Hypersonics and or Explosive Ordnance would be highly regarded
