The Opportunity

The Intermediate Design Engineer provides advice, designs, technical support and develops standards in accordance with project objectives and stakeholder requirements. The Intermediate Design Engineer is responsible for designs of secondary systems technology, specialising in substation control and LV distribution systems.

Duties and Responsibilities


  • Perform, review and approve secondary system designs complying to National Electricity Rules, Australian/IEC standards and Transgrid technical standards for control and LV distribution systems.
  • Select appropriate secondary equipment and arrangements to meet project objectives.
  • Manage the preparation of specifications and other design documentation.
  • Provide information as required to determine the best approach for the successful completion of the project in complex multi-disciplinary issues involving other groups.
  • Perform and review investigations and studies to assess the performance of the high voltage. network and secondary systems in accordance with appropriate design standards.
  • Perform and review studies in specialist areas such as LV distribution.

Project Management

  • Plan control and LV distribution designs for the projects to ensure that budget and schedules are met.
  • Prepare action plans; assign priorities to tasks and estimate costs in accordance with Transgrid policies and procedures.
  • Provide information on the progress of design and estimate the time remaining to complete design activities.

Health, safety and environment

  • All work is carried out in compliance with relevant legislation, Transgrid policies and procedures and local Safety and Environmental Plans.
  • Ensure all designs incorporate Safety in Design report and facilitate SID report handover and risk assessment to person/s carrying out the design.


  • Individually and with Managers, ensure understanding of Transgrid’s vision, purpose, and strategic and stakeholder considerations.
  • Provide delivery of timely, high-quality service to internal and external customers.
  • Take initiative in continuous improvement.

Skills & Experience

  • Degree qualification in Electrical Engineering.
  • Working knowledge and experience in substation control and LV distribution designs for electrical systems preferably transmission, distribution or generation.
  • Working knowledge of appropriate Australian and International Standards and Codes of Practice relevant to the design and testing of a substation’s control and LV distribution systems.
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, policies and procedures applicable to the preparation of designs and specifications.
  • Ability to complete, review and approve project designs with external consultants..
  • Proficient in the use of engineering business systems such as EDMS and other design software to develop designs.
  • Working knowledge of design quality assurance processes to ensure that designs meet quality requirements.
  • Ability to promote a high standard of professionalism, effective communication and personal integrity within the design team.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
