We currently have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Government Relations Specialist at Perth Head Office for 12 months.

About this role

As the Principal Government Relations Specialist, you will be required to:

  • Provide the executive team and other senior leaders with timely and distinctive insights into the external political climate in Australia and how that may impact Western Power’s current operations and aspirations.
  • Promote Western Power’s strategic interests by leading engagement and communicating complex information to influence key stakeholders, particularly key government stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain an expert level of understanding of key Western Power policy initiatives and priorities.
  • Maintain expert knowledge regarding state and federal energy-related policy and be able to provide strategic advice to the business on the interaction between these and Western Power’s strategic initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with key government stakeholders to appropriately represent Western Power’s position on various issues and build support for Western Power’s strategic initiatives.
  • Collate information across the business to advice on and communicate key issues, risks, strategic priorities etc to external parties in a timely manner and at a high professional standard.
  • Provide advice to Western Power teams regarding key external issues and stakeholder management, to build capacity, confidence, and ability to represent Western Power’s interests in their external facing activities and decision making.
  • Promote the value and function of Government Relations across Western Power to ensure advocacy opportunities are maximised for the business.
  • Support the development of team members by providing expert guidance and coaching to build technical capability and enable the Government Relations team to operate at a high standard and achieve results.

About you

We’re seeking someone with experience and attributes that include:

  • Broad and extensive knowledge and expertise in managing external relations with individuals and organisations in similar businesses.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills to work collaboratively and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and influencing skills. Strong ability to present compelling justifications for emerging issues and Western Power’s priorities for consumption by a range of internal and external stakeholders and enable effective interaction between key stakeholders.
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills, ability to problem solve and apply business context to emerging issues.
  • Significant experience working in State or Federal Government, parliamentary, political systems, and processes.
  • Understanding of the state and national electricity industry, market, regulatory framework.
  • An understanding of risk and compliance management and its application.
  • Experience supervising and coaching team members.
  • Excellent negotiation skills for internal and external audiences.
  • Experience working in a high-pressure, fast paced environment.
