We are now recruiting for a Portfolio Manager - Clinical Manufacturing & Supply to join the team.   

Clinical Manufacturing and Supply (CM&S) is accountable for the manufacture, sourcing and supply of investigational medicines to AstraZeneca’s extensive portfolio of clinical trials. As a function it partners across multiple SET areas to ensure supply to all AZ sponsored small molecule trials (phases 1-4), all late phase AZ sponsored biologic trials and GMA managed trials (externally sponsored or AZ sponsored trials using investigational product). 

In this role you will manage this complex and critical business in an optimised way. It is key at a portfolio level to understand, quantify and influence demand, to understand internal and external capacity and to match capacity with agreed demand in an optimal way to deliver the AstraZeneca portfolio.

The Portfolio Manager will cover one Therapy Area Business Unit alignment and responsibility for functional and improvement demand as per an agreed split.


  • Serve as the Portfolio & Capacity Management Therapy Area (TA) Lead – (BioPharma or Oncology)

  • Active management of the CM&S TA aligned portfolio and working with resource owners to ensure effective resource capacity management

  • CM&S representation in the TA Aligned Resource Councils ensuring decisions and escalations are managed with CM&S resource holders and appropriate stakeholders, and in the PT&D Portfolio Team providing ensuring CM&S is represented optimally

  • Work with PT&D Global Project Managers (& other portfolio functions) to maintain systems and tools, ensure accurate data reporting and presenting information for stakeholders

  • Business process ownership ensuring accurate clinical trial resource demand visibility to enable appropriate resource management allocation & budgeting

  • Driving automation and improvements in the CM&S Portfolio planning (demand & supply management) process

  • Portfolio analysis input to the CM&S Long Range Plan, Mid Term Plan and RBU processes

  • Ensuring a clear link between CM&S targets, such as productivity, and the demand management inputs e.g. algorithms

Additional responsibilities include;

  • Representing CM&S at the aligned clinical Resource Councils and working with GPPM Portfolio Managers where needed (including completion of capacity assessments)

  • Updating the system PLANIT as the need arises for FTE demand, tracking forecast accuracy and working with functional leaders to develop and continuously improve demand algorithms

  • Providing demand and supply data to senior management as part of budgeting processes

  • Collation, creation and presentation of data visualisations to enable the CM&S portfolio processes

  • Facilitating resource S&OP meetings at different layers in the organisation to ensure decisions are made to balance demand and supply including budget alignment to deliver the clinical portfolio

Essential Requirements:

  • Degree or equivalent experience in a related subject

  • Experience of sophisticated demand & planning management

  • Experience in Financial processes and budgeting

  • Experience of working with large quantities of data and / or analytics with high attention to detail and able to identify business insights


  • Experience of leading S&OP meetings

  • Experience of portfolio management

  • Awareness of the Drug Development process

  • Knowledge of drug substance, drug product, packaging, distribution and clinical supply and more in-depth experience in at least one of these areas

  • Experience of leading cross-functional, multi-cultural teams or networks

  • Experience of business process management and Lean

Part-time working hours would be considered for this role.
