We are seeking an experienced AI leader to deliver AstraZeneca’s ambition of putting AI at the heart of 80% of our business processes by 2025. You will be responsible for many advanced AI teams, consisting of over 80 engineers as we develop modern environments for data scientists and build AI solutions in collaboration with our business colleagues. You will closely need to partner with representatives across our business to develop and implement our AI strategy, delivering value to the organisation and achieving our goal of democratising AI.

This is a great opportunity to join the Enterprise Data & AI leadership team, to own the strategic vision to applying artificial intelligence and data science in IT. You will support the delivery of our IT transformation goal, whilst being a role model for digital behaviours and championing a culture of data centric decision making.

The ideal candidate will have relevant experience working with advanced AI and data science capabilities. You will have incubated exploratory AI projects from idea to prototype, establishing the core value and impact to develop successful algorithms into production AI solutions and services. You will have exposure to developing AI in a regulatory or compliance setting, with an appreciation for the documentation and diligence required to deliver ethical AI responsibly. You should have experience of developing machine learning models in more than one cloud platform (AWS, Azure, Google…) and be familiar with the challenges of deploying web services for different audiences.

Our teams support major AI initiatives and the underlying environments and platforms that enable all of the data scientists in AstraZeneca. You'll have responsibility for both the delivery of projects driving immediate business value, establishing new AI services in the future to anticipate the next needs for our organisation as well as establishing a rigour around self-service to ensure that our AI services are democratised and reused across AstraZeneca. You should be comfortable networking and establishing data science communities.

As a strong software engineering leader with an interest in building complex systems through agile methodologies, you will be responsible for inventing how we use technology, machine learning, and data to accelerate the productivity of AstraZeneca. You will help envision our next generation of AI capabilities at scale, which will include supporting engineering leads in raising software and deployment standards across the group.

Key Accountabilities

  • Run, manage and mature the Enterprise AI Services group to communicate strategic capabilities that business customers can consume and the business value that these bring
  • Lead our IT2025 strategy around Power Smart Capabilities At Scale, helping to put AI centre of what we do
  • Directly line manage 4-5 key AI technical leaders for AI platforms, services and products. Overall management of a team of 90 data scientists and 40+ AI contractors.
  • Help secure investment and senior consensus for the next generation projects that require funding. Collaborate with data science leadership & executives to convince them of the value of AI
  • Prepared to unblock organisational challenges to enable your team to scale AI services for self-service where possible.
  • Drive the adoption and consumption of AI across multiple SET areas, providing deep expertise and advise where appropriate
  • Recognised as key expert in pioneering technologies, defining the vision across our IT organisation.
  • Software products deployed in impactful business processed with annualised value and time realized.
  • Delivery excellence – streamlined partnering with Line of Business (LoB) and Business Technology Groups (BTGs) leading to problem identification, planning and execution.
  • Software excellence – publications and conference communication, open-sourced repositories, internal GitHub contribution, technical workshops and educational sessions.
  • Liaise with data scientists across all areas of the AstraZeneca value chain (R&D, Operations, Commercial and Enabling Units) to understand their challenges and work with them to help make their algorithms reusable for others.
  • Motivate, guide and support for your AI team leaders as they build and operationalise their AI services.
  • Drive an approach of making AI services and marketplaces simple, user friendly and well documented for others to easily consume and use
  • Understand the necessary compliance guardrails needed for different use cases and data sensitivities, working with governance functions within our organization to enable compliant analytical solutions.
  • Partner with architecture teams to ensure reusable infrastructure and deployment patterns are maintained across use cases.


  • Bsc/MSc/Ph.D degree in Computer Science or related quantitative field.
  • Demonstrable deep technical skills in delivering the technical implementation of one or more of the following areas: Machine Learning Engineering, high availability infrastructure, Kubernetes, AWS, natural language processing or computer vision.
  • History leading large AI projects through the lifecycle of prototype, production and platform outputs, sourcing funding, attracting talent and acting product focused roadmaps.
  • A passion for helping others solve data science and AI problems.
  • Experience in leading teams of teams to deliver successful business outcomes in addition to large teams of (40+) engineers or scientists
  • Experience driving a consensus driven technology roadmap across diverse viewpoints and preferences.
  • Ability to depict the strategic value and return on investment for tooling across the Machine Learning lifecycle.
  • Experience of designing, building and deploying system attributes that enhance reproducible Machine Learning Systems (determinism, data versioning, explain-ability) within regulated areas will be desirable
  • Demonstrable experience and strong opinion about the right data science and AI tools – from data wrangling to production AI.
  • Experience running or managing an enterprise AI or data science solutions built on cloud and containers, using microservice architectures and serverless approaches to lower cost of operation.
  • Strong passion to increase the ease of access of Data Science, Machine Learning and AI tools to AI experts and beginners across a large company.
  • Experience building, operating and governing GxP compliant life-science and/or SOX compliant financial systems will be looked upon favourably.
  • Significant Experience with open source and cloud native Machine Learning Platforms and Toolkits
