The Associate Business Analyst will support AstraZeneca’s Finance Transformation programme as a member of the Data Services Team supporting core business analysis as well as data quality improvements and assurance across Finance Transformation projects with an initial focus to support our journey to enhance Clinical Trial Cost Management insights.

The Business Analyst will be responsible to deliver robust data mappings / transformations and cleansing. The role owner will provide comprehensive analysis of relevant source information (ERP, PLANIT, VCV), act on the related data mapping activities, support cleanse recommendation definition and work closely with stakeholders within the project and in the business to validate, agree and implemented the required data enhancement, while gaining deep understanding of Clinical Trial Costing processes.

To be successful candidates will need to have solid experience with robust Data Analysis and reconciliation approaches, expertise in Financial Accounting Processes and SAP FI ideally in the R&D or Clinical Trial context and a successful track record in delivering complex data mappings working closely with business stakeholders. Further great attention to detail, work in a highly organised & structured manner and good collaboration skills are essential. Established R&D functional knowledge is desired.

Key accountabilities are to deliver robust data mappings / transformations and cleansing across relevant information of our Clinical Trial Costing scope creating lasting data quality for the organization. The Business Analyst is expected to perform at advanced level in the following:

  • Stakeholder Analysis & Change - Effectively identifies stakeholders from all areas of the business, and actively builds and maintains relationships according to individual stakeholder needs and levels of influence.

  • Data Analysis - Responsible for the analysis of core data aspects relevant to the project delivery with the expectation to develop defined sets of mapping, cleansing and analysis.

  • Data Cleansing – Profiling, analysis and fixing of key master and transaction data, which will be consumed in target CTCM system. Some key activities to be performed:

    • Understand the detailed data requirements and designs

    • Apply comprehensive profiling and analysis capability to assess data quality and data readiness

    • Support the creation of robust profiling and analysis reports / outcome summaries and validate results with BAU, Design & Tech Teams

    • Support definition and delivery of relevant fix recommendations to enhance data quality enabling reliable information insight provision through CTCM solution

    • Land enhancements with Business Stakeholders and influence underlying root cause resolutions to establish long-term data quality assurance

  • Data Mapping/Transformation - Design, Define, Collect and validate key data mappings enabling target CTCM system data demands to be met and feed these into the Tech data migration cycle. Some key activities to be performed:

    • Review the Logical/Physical model to understand technical mapping table design/requirement

    • Review of Data Model and high level design of key mapping requirements & close open queries/questions (with SME/Business)

    • Create mappings for selected simple mapping tables

    • Collect relevant business mappings where required by connecting with selected BAU stakeholders

    • Validate mappings and collections and hand these over into the Tech data migration process

  • Testing – Engage in relevant SIT and UAT testing of data ensuring the quality of information through standard reconciliation approaches of source to target and gaining business leader sign-off where relevant

  • Data Quality Assurance – Reviews and influences the optimization of data process designs working closely with the relevant BAU SMEs and other stakeholders, and turning them into documented actionable standards

Design and Technology workstreams ensuring data deliverables meet overarching project demands Business Stakeholders to ensure that data fixes and process solutions fulfil their future strategic needs and challenges

Process Owners to identify and devise solutions that optimize business data quality, capability and competitiveness


  • Finance Accounting degree or formal certification in Business Analysis practice

  • Business Analyst experience of at least 3 years

  • Proven track record of providing comprehensive data and process analysis and documentation in complex solution delivery context

  • Proven experience of successfully using a variety of data profiling and business analysis tools/techniques to enable business change

  • Solid engagement, communication and stakeholder management skills, including excellent presentation and influencing skills

  • Experience of working with complex integrated systems, using creative and strategic thinking to deliver exceptional results

  • Intermediate skills of using MS Access / Excel / Powerpoint


  • R&D Finance functional or Clinical Trial experience

  • Experience of working in a global organisation with complex/geographical context

  • Pharmaceutical business awareness/business domain knowledge

  • Proven experience of capturing business rules from a range of stakeholders and deploying them as policies and standards

  • Experience of testing, writing test scripts and conducting testing for business sign-off

  • Use of SAP FICO or other financial software

  • Intermediate skills of PL/SQL/PostgreSQL

  • Expert knowledge of Data Profiling Tools (e.g. Alteryx)
