Discovery Sciences currently have an exciting opportunity for a Research Scientist to join our rapidly growing Functional Genomics (FGX) group who are responsible for the identification and validation of novel targets to support AstraZeneca's clinical pipeline.

What’ll you do?

The exciting position will be working in the Functional genomics Target Validation team, providing the chance to join a growing and dynamic environment focused on the validation and mechanistic annotation of hit lists coming from functional genomics screens, to translate them into new drug targets for our oncology pipeline.

This is a laboratory-based role, where you will craft, lead and resource experiments. You will be comfortable working as part of a cross functional team to deliver and interpret data and determine next steps to drive projects forwards. You will present data to key stakeholders internally and achieve external scientific transparency through oral presentations and peer-reviewed publications.

We are looking for applicants with strong cellular biology expertise and a willingness to learn key principles and technologies related to high-throughput cellular assays. This is a laboratory-based role, where you will work together with other team members to craft and deliver experiments, contributing data and intellectual input to drive projects forwards and impact the Oncology pipeline. The role will report directly into the Director of the Target Validation team.


  • Ph.D in Molecular or Cell biology or related discipline or a BSc/MSc degree with significant relevant experience
  • Experience of cell culture including a practical understanding of assay optimisation to enable generation of robust, reproducible and sensitive cellular assays
  • Proven experience in molecular and cell biology techniques, including for example, transfection and transduction methods, generation of engineered cell lines, high content imaging, transcriptomics assays, flow cytometry, methods to assess cellular signalling.
  • Capable of scouting for scientific and technical developments in the fields of CRISPR screening, genome engineering and target validation
  • Excellent team working, communication and networking skills with experience of interacting effectively across interfaces of discipline, culture, and expertise.


  • Understanding of critical steps in target validation campaigns
  • Background in Cancer Biology
  • Good publication records in peer-reviewed journals
