The role of the AstraZeneca Group Tax team is to ensure that the implementation of business decisions is both practical and profitable from a tax perspective, whilst managing risk. It is pivotal in setting strategic tax policy, managing compliance and designing our business in a tax efficient way.

We partner with the business to support it with its strategic goals. We provide world-class knowledge, insight and advice in the area of tax, as it relates to AstraZeneca.

This role will be as an Indirect Tax Manager working within Group Tax covering business partnering and tax technology advisory work.

This role would ideally suit a manager in a big four firm looking to apply their skills in-house for the first time, or a manager from a large MNE (ideally Pharmaceutical).


  • Advise the business regarding the indirect tax impact of existing supply chains and potential changes.

  • Effective business partnering to secure technical guidance is provided to stakeholders on BAU activities, procedures and systems specifically on indirect tax compliance, reporting and documentation

  • Provide support and updates to the business related to indirect tax.

  • Identify areas for process improvement/ harmonization/savings.

  • Work with our compliance outsource provider to monitor compliance and drive data quality.

  • Identify and escalate issues of risks and compliance failings.

  • Review returns/payment instructions prepared by provider.

  • Supervise tax authority audits/ correspondence.

  • Monitor available information with other Taxes in mind and liaise closely with the wider Group Tax team.

Essential for the role:

  • You will be an indirect tax advisor, preferably with a professional qualification and at least five years of experience in providing indirect tax advice in a large MNE environment (ideally Pharmaceutical) or, if in practice, to such clients.

  • Experience as indirect tax SME on tax technology projects focused on indirect tax compliance, reporting and documentation e.g. Digital Tax Authorities’ mandates (SAF-T, SII, MTD, e-invoicing), indirect tax sensitisation of SAP, etc.

  • Strong indirect tax technical capability with a good knowledge of both UK and international indirect tax issues.

  • Excellent team working ethos, interpersonal skills, ability to make decisions and confidence to express opinions.

  • Able to build strong relationships and maintain a network of contacts with other people at a variety of levels across AstraZeneca and external stakeholders (e.g. AZ teams and stakeholders, advisors, vendors, customers and tax authorities).

  • Excellent analytical, written and verbal communication skills.

  • The ability to manage numerous complex projects, progress actions in a coordinated and organised manner and meet tight deadlines.
