The Head of BioPharmaceuticals R&D Communications is responsible for leading the internal and external communications efforts on behalf of the BioPharmaceuticals R&D organisation, and cross-R&D activities. This senior position within AstraZeneca’s Global Corporate Affairs organisation plays a pivotal role in enhancing the company’s scientific reputation across a broad range of internal and external stakeholders. The successful candidate will be an inspirational people manager, a trusted counsellor and a visionary leader who holds responsibility for the development and delivery of an integrated, multi-channel communication strategy designed to showcase the great science and outstanding people across AstraZeneca R&D.

Close work with a number of AstraZeneca’s most senior scientists will be an important element of this role, not only providing them with advice and counsel around communications, but also playing a full hands-on role to support the delivery of impactful content and collateral.

As a member of the BioPharmaceuticals R&D Leadership Team, the Head of BioPharmaceuticals R&D Communications will serve as a key leader and business advisor across the AstraZeneca enterprise, and will collaborate closely across functions (eg with early and late R&D) to ensure a coordinated and compliant approach to delivery of programmes and stakeholder engagement. This role will also provide leadership to a team of globally dispersed communications professionals who are responsible for wide ranging internal and external communications activities for BioPharmaceuticals R&D, Cross-R&D (including Oncology R&D and Alexion R&D), Cambridge Communications and STEM Outreach in the UK.

Biopharmaceuticals R&D is responsible for key therapy areas of Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism and Respiratory & Immunology, with the ambition to intervene earlier to protect vital organs, slow or reverse disease progression, and achieve remission for these often degenerative, debilitating, and life-threatening conditions. So many more people can live better, healthier lives.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the development and delivery of an integrated, multi-channel communication strategy to enhance the reputation of AZ as a scientific leader across our most important internal and external stakeholders –scientific communities, recruits, investors and employees.

  • Build the AZ reputation as a scientific leader within our BioPharmaceuticals Therapy Areas (TAs) by working closely with colleagues in the dedicated Corporate Affairs TA teams, ensuring communications activity align with broader AZ corporate agenda.

  • Maintain, evolve and lead the use of a compelling narrative for AZ R&D (including BioPharmaceuticals R&D, Oncology R&D and Alexion R&D), in close collaboration with colleagues, with clear messages and sharp proof points to build awareness and confidence among key stakeholder groups.

  • Provide hands-on executive communications support to our most senior and high profile AZ scientists, supporting their media activities, internal and external events and employee engagement programmes.

  • Provide strategic support and guidance of AZ’s UK STEM outreach activities and initiatives and Cambridge Communications.

  • Coach, manage and mentor a globally dispersed team of communications professionals, including talent management and succession planning as well as day-to-day skills development and training.

  • Lead major change communications including overseeing R&D’s transformation programme.

  • Anticipate long term R&D reputational issues, developing appropriate plans and responses for crisis communication/incident management as required.

  • In collaboration with the GCA Digital team, lead the development and delivery of AZ R&D’s digital strategy. Includes use of AZ’s global corporate digital channels and paid-for/organic digital campaigns/content to meet agreed strategic goals.

  • Establish measures of success and implement relevant evaluation tools for all communications activities.

  • Demonstrate enterprise leadership and role model value-aligned behaviour.

To be successful in this role you will need the following experience:

  • University degree preferably in the life sciences with extensive experience in the biopharmaceutical or life science industry and experience of R&D pipeline communications. Will be motivated and inspired by the science.

  • An established track record of delivering integrated and impactful internal and external communications programmes across multiple channels and stakeholders, with demonstrable measures of success.

  • Proven ability to master complex scientific topics, and to translate them into clear and concise plans, best-in-class argumentation and messaging.

  • In depth experience of delivering impactful and connected Executive Communications, whilst maintaining a focus on the overall corporate reputation and image.

  • Ability to combine creative, strategic thinking with hands on delivery with expert technical skills across written/digital/multi-media communications and knowledge of technology options.

  • Proven ability to serve as an engaged, credible member of a high-performing leadership team, with a successful record of providing effective advice, counsel, and coaching to senior leaders.

  • Exceptional global leader with expertise in building a shared vision, inspiring commitment and mobilising organisations around corporate affairs priorities. Able to develop and lead a high performance team of direct and indirectly reporting members.

  • Experience of driving programmes to drive employee engagement.

  • Proven ability to lead on global reputational issues and issues management programmes for a complex enterprise with multiple stakeholders

  • Strong business acumen – able to read the internal and external environment and proactively steer decision making accordingly, acting as a global ambassador of the company

Knowledge required for this role:

  • Track record of leading communications teams to deliver tangible results in support of business priorities.

  • A recognised expert in employee, digital and leader communications, campaigns, business partnering, change communication and event management.

  • Strong executive presence and acumen advising C-suite and board-level leaders. An active listener, who can flex their communication and influencing style to work with different executive leaders.

  • Experience managing different stakeholder relationships at all levels.

  • Management of complex issues/crises with international dimensions.

  • Extensive understanding of the AZ business and its operating environment.

  • Will be confident working with senior executive leaders; with a track record of operating as a trusted advisor. Will have the ability to effectively deliver a robust alternative viewpoint. Know when to ask the right questions and when to provide the right answers.
