The Head of Emerging Medicines, Cardiovascular Renal Metabolism (CVRM) BioPharmaceuticals Medical (BPM) is accountable for delivering a medical strategy to support prioritised assets in early/late-stage development, competitive for current and future needs. It is a leadership position that reports directly to the Vice President CVRM BPM, with direct reports. The role will require strong leadership and alignment with colleagues and functions across AZ, as well as maintaining tight working relationships with BPM and in-line brands. We are looking for someone with a broad understanding of the business (Commercial, Medical and R&D), who can demonstrate innovative forward thinking, has the ability to partner and identify new opportunities, and can engage with a diverse array of partners externally. The ideal candidate is an MD, PhD or PharmD with 7-10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry, ideally in Medical Affairs, working at the country and global/regional level.

What you'll do

Framework and structure for the BPM Emerging Medicines Team:

  • Build and lead a CVRM BPM Emerging Medicines team

  • Align the ways of working framework with R&I counterparts and communicate remit and expectations with key stakeholders across the business

  • Develop Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for the Emerging Medicines team, and communicate impact and outcomes across the business

Emerging pipeline medical strategy and plan:

  • Accountable for creating and developing the CVRM emerging pipeline medical strategy and plan

  • Ensure appropriate strategic external engagement to refine and validate the strategic approach and drive advocacy

  • Ensure appropriate implementation of strategic evidence generation to support the scientific narrative and to optimize development planning

  • Ensure close collaboration with established brands to ensure strategic alignment

  • Engage at a senior level with markets/regions to ensure customer insights and local needs inform emerging pipeline strategies and plans

Leadership, partnering and resourcing:

  • Form strategic alliances and role model Medical leadership across the business

  • Drive the Therapy Area Leadership Team (TALT) and Disease Area (DA) team agendas, to ensure Medical representation and impact

  • Bring diverse external partners to the table, driving innovation and advocacy

  • Work collaboratively and appropriately to raise awareness of the emerging pipeline externally

  • Allocate BPM resource to the emerging pipeline, balancing risk and opportunity

Essential for the role:

  • Doctoral level degree (MD, PhD, or PharmD)

  • 7 years pharmaceutical industry experience

  • Experienced team leader at a global/regional level, with a track record of establishing high performance teams – enterprise leader mindset

  • Experience working in and/or with different functions within the pharmaceutical industry, e.g. Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, Regulatory, Commercial

  • Strategic and innovative thinker with executive presence

  • Demonstrated track record delivering results in a complex matrix environment, building capabilities, fostering collaboration, and leading large scale impactful medical initiatives

  • Strong analytical mind-set and ability to quickly assess large amounts of information and distil into key messages and actions

  • Ability to flex between high level strategy and detailed tactics, as required

  • Success executing multi-year strategic plans

  • Proven ability to build internal and external networks and to collaborate across geographies and cultures; enterprise business leader mindset

  • Significant experience presenting to senior leadership; persuasive oral and written communication skills, including the ability to develop and deliver executive presentations

  • Understanding of the complex and evolving Medical space, including both existing stakeholders and future trends

  • Integrity and high ethical standards
