Business Area:

Global Engineering works closely with the Operations, R&D and Commercial functions within AstraZeneca to deliver major capital investments for the company (typically over $10million). The capital expansion program involves the engineering, construction and qualification of both new and growing assets. In addition to the asset provision activities, Global Engineering supports the Business by providing technical support to sites and other global functions. Global Engineering is made up of a mixture of Project Managers, Project Control Specialists, Project Technical Managers and Subject Matter Experts. These project teams work directly with third party design and construction partners to deliver facilities that meet AstraZeneca’s requirements for safety, quality, time and cost.

This exciting new role within Global Engineering, will be centred on developing a robust and sustainable Engineering SHE compliance framework.


Your strong Engineering, and SHE knowledge and experience will enable you to prioritise your efforts into areas of high risk, to assess the effectiveness of existing processes to establish an improvement plan to develop a robust Engineering SHE compliance framework for Global Engineering.

You'll develop robust strategies that will shape the organisation and culture, and act as the champion for Engineering SHE compliance, ensuring risk assessments are clear, identifying and leading the development of appropriate support technical standards in high risk areas (such as pressure systems, equipment in explosive atmospheres, functional safety), maintaining appropriate training and competency records. You will ensure that detection of non-compliance is built into governance processes and appropriate monitoring is in place. We'll need you to develop response mechanisms to ensure that learning is captured through rigorous investigations to establish root cause and monitoring of corrective actions.

Partner engagement and management is key to the success of this position.

You'll provide direct engineering technical support in your area of specialism for capital projects and to support the broader business building effective working relationships with sites and Global SHE.

Essential requirements:

  • A Degree qualified Engineer or SHE professional.

  • An experienced risk assessment study leader within depth knowledge of process safety management and risk assessment methodologies (such as HAZOP, LOPA, QRA etc)

  • A confident communicator who is able to present optimally and influence across different levels of the organisation.

  • Self-motivated and able to work on own initiative

  • Resilient with the ability to deal with complexity and uncertainty

  • Strong leadership and strategic skills, with the ability to lead and inspire change

  • Expert experience in one or more of the following Engineering SHE related topics:

- Functional Safety

- Equipment in Potentially Explosive Atmospheres

- Pressure Systems
