The Director, Global Sustainability Corporate Affairs will play a pivotal role in advancing our company’s leading sustainability positioning, demonstrating AstraZeneca’s commitment to addressing major societal issues (climate change, access to healthcare, inclusion & diversity) through effective use of corporate channels and spokespersons, campaigns, platforms and partnerships.
The role will be accountable for developing and implementing our global sustainability corporate affairs strategy, working closely with our global sustainability, global media, corporate communications, internal communications government affairs & policy, therapy area, regional and in-market corporate affairs teams. This position will manage our communications and engagement on our interconnected sustainability approach and narrative.

By connecting and leveraging our programmes across these three pillars, which include Ambition Zero Carbon (AstraZeneca’s flagship science-based decarbonisation strategy), the Sustainable Markets Initiative Health Systems Task Force (championed by CEO Pascal Soriot), Young Health Programme (YHP) and Partnership for Health System Sustainability and Resilience (PHSSR), we have the opportunity to advance our sustainability agenda globally, regionally and in key markets, whilst driving authentic thought leadership, strengthening our corporate reputation, and enhancing employee engagement.
Importantly, this role will link our sustainability agenda to our core Therapy Areas (Oncology, Rare Diseases, and BioPharmaceuticals, including Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism, and Respiratory & Immunology) demonstrating how we are decarbonising patient care pathways and the lifecycle of our medicines while improving health outcomes, including through the latest digital innovations. This role will lead engagement with on our sustainable net-zero healthcare priorities through engagement with media, policy makers, governments & non-governmental organisations (NGOs).
The role will also be responsible for all significant global sustainability announcements, campaigns and milestones, while ensuring timely, impactful communications around quarterly reporting, disclosures and rankings through collaboration with our Investor Relations and reporting teams.

The role will report to the Senior Director, Global Partnerships and Operations, whose team is accountable for best-in-class and consistent delivery of global platforms and partnerships, including the World Economic Forum (WEF), Sustainable Markets Initiative (SMI), COP programmes and multilateral engagement. Sustainability is a critical theme across these platforms.
Develop & deliver global external corporate affairs strategies, communications campaigns and toolkits for global sustainability announcements and/or milestones
Identify proactive media and speaking opportunities to drive sustainability thought leadership
Leverage global platforms and partnerships to advance sustainability agenda, through close collaboration with Global Media Relations, Corporate Communications, Therapy Areas and other teams.
Work closely with Investor Relations and reporting teams to deliver high-quality and impactful communications to investors and other key stakeholders
Partner with and upskill Global (incl. Therapy Area), Regional and Local Corporate Affairs teams to enable the translation of global sustainability communications in different contexts and for a range of stakeholder groups.
Oversee the strategic direction and delivery of the global Digital and Social Media strategy relating to our global sustainability agenda
Cultivate and maintain relationships with key partners, advocates and influencers to protect, nurture and build the corporate reputation of the business; Manage external agency relationships
Education, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Extensive experience working in the corporate affairs/communications field
Sustainability / ESG corporate affairs experience
Strategic communications and public affairs background, with demonstrated results within a leading company, agency, government or NGO
Consistent track record of leading external corporate reputation matters, campaigns and issues and crisis management for a complex enterprise with multiple stakeholders
Ability to work under pressure and prioritise accordingly
Excellent writing skills
Experience with communication of political and complex strategic issues, and ability to translate them into clear and concise messaging
Strategic and creative thinker able to see and leverage connections and maximise the value of opportunities in unique and engaging ways
Proven ability of influencing colleagues and senior leaders across organisations
“Self-starter” with evidence of capability for matrix and cross-functional working
Ability to utilise channels for business benefit within resource limits
Can effectively delegate and manage 3rd parties to deliver outputs
Pharmaceutical industry or multinational company experience
Relevant vocational qualifications or equivalent experience
Experience working in multiple markets
