Cambridge is one of the most exciting bioscience hotspots in the world and plays a central role in our mission to deliver life-changing medicines to patients. Granta Park has a gym, nursery, and central restaurant/coffee place as part of the science park facilities that are accessible to our staff. We also have our own bistro and deli in the AZ buildings. This is our biggest and most spacious lab site with easy access from all major routes and ample car parking available - come and join us! Business area

The Biologics Engineering team is responsible for the discovery and optimisation of biological candidate drugs to support all therapy area drug discovery pipelines and for the development of in-house biologics discovery platforms and novel drug modalities to support future drug discovery efforts.

What you'll do

We are seeking a highly motivated Senior Scientist to support our biologics discovery pipeline and provide recombinant antibody engineering expertise to support the discovery of next-generation biologics. This role supports therapeutic projects/technologies as well as developing and implementing next-generation in vitro antibody libraries and discovery platforms, which can be applied to pre-clinical programs.The role includes the isolation and optimisation of biologics and predominantly uses in vitro screening approaches coupled with NGS analysis and interpretation.The role involves working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, and interacting with many AstraZeneca departments (e.g., Biology, Data Science & Artifical Intelligence, and IT).

Essential for the role

  • PhD with relevant experience or BSc/higher degree with equivalent lab-based experience

  • Extensive experience and track-record working with in vitro display technologies (e.g., phage, yeast, and ribosome display)

  • Experience of antibody isolation and optimisation strategies as well as in vitro library generation and bio-panning using different enrichment strategies

  • Experienced in molecular biology methods and technologies (e.g., PCR, RT-PCR, IVTT, NGS), and their application to the generation of antibody fragment (or other protein scaffold) libraries

  • Ability to provide solutions to a variety of complex problems

  • Ability to optimize protocols, troubleshoot, interpret experimental results/data and maintain accurate, high quality and up-to-date experimental records

  • Strong communication skills in a team environment and an ability to learn and embrace new technologies quickly

Desirable for the role

  • Background in drug discovery and development in the pharmaceutical industry

  • Experience using high-throughput automation systems e.g., Hamilton robotics liquid handlers and Illumina sequencing platforms

  • Experience in high-throughput antibody screening, reformatting and characterisation methods including in vitro biochemical assays (ELISA, SPR, BLI or flow cytometry) and functional assays

  • Experience with computational methods and machine learning applied for antibody design and optimisation

  • Understands the theoretical concepts of molecular interactions and applies these to the experimental design in support of drug and technology projects

  • Experience of leading/co-leading and/or managing research projects
