This is exemplified by the increased number of new modalities entering clinical development.The New Modalities and Parenteral Development department (NMPD) has accountability for developing the pipeline of both new modality projects and traditional synthetic molecules requiring parenteral delivery.

It sits within the Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) function. PT&D is the bridge which turns brilliant science into effective medicines. We work across the entire value chain, designing and delivering the active ingredients, formulations and devices required to support new and existing medicinesthat help millions of people.

The role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a specialist in BioPharmaceutics modelling and simulationto join our Pharmaceutics capability in NMPD, Macclesfield, UK, at the Associate Principal Scientist level.

In NMPD, you will be an influential member of a group responsible for generatingdeep BioPharmaceuticsunderstanding of drug products including conventional dosage forms, enabling formulations, nano-medicines and advanced drug delivery technologies across multiple delivery routes.We will rely on you to provideexpertBioPharmaceuticsknowledge,and apply sophisticated modelling and simulation approaches, in orderto build mechanistic understanding of drug product performance and design bridging strategies.Combined with your experience, the resulting insights will be used to support drug projects from the early clinical phase through to commercial filings.

As an Associate Principal Scientist, you will be encouraged to work collaboratively with colleagues from other disciplines in AstraZeneca (e.g.modelling, formulation, materials science, analytical, clinical pharmacology, regulatory etc) and with external partners (e.g.academics, professional organisations, technology providers etc) to deliverboth drug product and strategic capability projects. The scope of the opportunitywill require you to lead and mentor others whilst applying your expertise to potentially new challenges such as sub-cutaneous delivery. You will also be an importantlink to our modelling and simulation group, working with them to develop new modelling tools and approaches by combining your BioPharmaceutics and modellingskills.

This role would suit an individual who can blend technical expertise and scientific passion with a committed and collaborative approach to delivery. All role accountabilities have a significant impact on the development of AstraZeneca’s project portfolio and the continuous development of our scientific prowess. Depending on the ability and experience of the successful applicant, coaching and training will be provided to ensure optimal delivery against the role.

Required Skills & Knowledge

  • Degreein a relevant subject leading tosignificant industrial or academic experience of applyingmodelling and simulation solutions to BioPharmaceutic problems,through the use ofPhysiologically-basedBioPharmaceutic modelling (PBBM)with tools such as GastroPlus, SimCyp etc.

  • Excellentunderstanding of the relationship between in-vitro drug product properties and in-vivo pharmacokinetic performance, ideally with knowledge of the link to control strategy development

  • The ability to research andsolve stretching scientific problems and undertake troubleshooting of project issues, with clear examples of the use of modelling and simulation

  • Communication and engagement skills that enable discussion of complex ideas in an easy to understand way, to a range of stakeholders

  • Experience of technical coaching, supervision of small teams or leading scientific projects.
