AstraZeneca’s Centre for Genomics Research (CGR) is looking for a highly motivated and creative postdoc to work on an exciting project involving data mining more than 500K whole genomes (WGS) from UK Biobank and 100K genomes project and developing novel machine learning algorithms to translate obtained knowledge into clinical practice.

This is a 3-year programme. 2-years will be a Fixed Term Contract, with a 1-year extension which will be merit based.

About the Opportunity:

Fuelled by next-generation sequencing, human genetics research has provided unprecedented insights into revealing mechanisms of many genetic diseases and brought great value to drug development. The Centre for Genomics Research (CGR) is an AstraZeneca initiative involving the generation and analysis of genetic data in participants from AstraZeneca clinical studies and large population cohorts including the 500,000-participant UK Biobank study. Our in-house clinical genomic database is among one of the largest globally, currently housing close to 700,000 human exome and genome sequences, as well as array genotyping datasets. These enable AstraZeneca to identify genetic determinants of disease risk, validate new targets for medicines, and improve patient stratification opportunities among the core areas of oncology, respiratory, immunology, cardiovascular, renal and metabolic disease.

An exciting Postdoctoral opportunity now exists in CGR, which involves analysing large-scale WGS data and gaining maximal biological insights to aid clinical application. You will apply advanced analytic methods to explore data patterns in human germline mutations, elucidate the mechanisms of germline mutagenesis, and use machine learning algorithms to develop clinical tools for improving patient stratification in drug development.

The successful postdoc will become a member of CGR and work closely with a team of genome analysts and informatics staff. The Postdoc is expected to conduct independent research and produce high-quality peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international meetings.

As part of the programme, you will be co-supervised by senior genome analysts from CGR and an external academic advisor from Harvard University.

Qualification, Skills & Experience:

Essential Requirements

  • PhD in bioinformatics, computational biology, computer science, mathematics, physics, or another related quantitative fields
  • Strong background in machine learning and statistics
  • Proficiency in R or Python
  • Experience in high-performance computing
  • Openness to learn
  • Passionate about translating research into clinical application

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience in analysing large-scale human genomic data
  • Experience in C/C++ programming
  • Experience in GPU programming
  • Experience in cancer and molecular biology
  • Track record of first-authored work published in reputable scientific journals
