Senior Scientist (Statistics & Data Science) – On-Market Technical, Chemical Development

Salary: Competitive

Location: Macclesfield

AstraZeneca is a major international healthcare business engaged in the research, development, manufacture and marketing of prescription pharmaceutical and the supply of healthcare services. But we’re more than one of the world’s leading pharmaceutical companies. At AstraZeneca we’re proud to have a unique workplace culture that inspires innovation and collaboration. Here, employees are empowered to express diverse perspectives and are made to feel valued, energized and rewarded for their ideas and creativity.

Pharmaceutical Technology and Development (PT&D) are the bridge, which turns brilliant science into actual medicines that help millions of people. We work across the entire value chain, designing and delivering active ingredients, formulations and devices required to support new medicines – from supplies for use in early toxicology studies and clinical trials to developing the technology to ensure drugs can be scaled up for commercial manufacture.

Drug Substance On-Market Technical

In Chemical Development (CD) we believe that nothing is impossible, and we are determined to push the boundaries of science to deliver medicines to our patients. We combine people’s technical knowledge and understanding with their talent and drive to design, develop and optimise synthetic routes and analytical methods that deliver the active pharmaceutical ingredients of our medicines in a sustainable, commercially viable way. We believe in innovation and continuous improvement, working closely with colleagues in academia and across industry, to ensure that we apply the newest technologies and principles in the development and delivery of our medicines.

We now have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Scientist (Statistics & Data Science) in our growing On-Market Technical (OMT) group within Chemical Development. The group are dedicated to the lifecycle management of commercial active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) at AstraZeneca. We maintain continuity of supply, ensure license-to-operate and continue to deliver business value through optimisation of manufacturing processes, methods and supply chain design. AstraZeneca currently manufactures a high percentage of API externally at Contract Manufacturing Organisations (CMOs).

Key responsibilities:

The successful role holder(s) will work as part of a multi-skilled group supporting the On Market Technical (OMT) group, providing support to the commercial API portfolio, using data-driven techniques to increase process understanding and propose improvements in manufacturing and analytical processes. The role requires working across multiple internal and external interfaces (e.g. manufacturing sites, regulatory, quality assurance, formulation, procurement, external sourcing and CMOs). As an experienced statistician you will:

  • Deliver statistical analysis to support lifecycle management activities within the OMT API portfolio through use of basic and advanced statistics, data visualization, multivariate modelling, and data science.
  • Utilize data visualization and statistical analysis to support core business processes (e.g. problem solving, process optimization, tech transfer, process validation and qualification, continued process verification, analytical method development, etc.).
  • Champion robust data-driven approaches to improving process understanding, by enabling and driving use of data across the project portfolio, whilst collaborating with the wide range of other OMT skillsets (project technical experts, chemists, analytical chemists, engineers and particle scientists).
  • Assess internal and externally generated data carefully considering its reliability, interpretations and findings. Draw authoritative conclusions and recommendations so that the significance of the data can be appreciated by a broad skill range.
  • Advance the digital ambition of OMT by innovating, trialling and developing new ways of working, technologies, or methods.
  • Enhance the capability of OMT project teams by upskilling and coaching in basic statistics and data analysis techniques.
  • Be responsible for maintaining strong links to the wider data strategy in CD and across PT&D and improving the external profile of AstraZeneca, CD and OMT by publication and presentation.

All these activities will have a significant impact on the speed, quality and cost of the AZ commercial portfolio, the overall success of the Supply Chain as well as ensuring the commercial viability of the medicine. The role, therefore, has a significant impact on both financial and reputational aspects of the business.

Essential Requirements:

  • A BSc/MSc or higher in a statistics/mathematics/data science related discipline with relevant industrial experience, or a BSc/MSc or higher in a scientific discipline with demonstrable statistics, chemometrics, or data science experience.
  • Has a strong interest in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in multidisciplinary teams delivering statistical support/data science with ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Strong experience in the use of basic statistics (e.g. hypothesis tests, linear regression, analysis of variability, T-tests) and statistical visualization techniques.
  • Strong experience using statistical analysis software packages.
  • Broad/general knowledge of statistical methods and their application to process data.

Desirable Requirements

  • Experience with industrial and process analytics (e.g. Chemometrics and Multivariate Analysis, CPV/SPC, Process Capability).
  • Experience with application of statistical methodologies within a pharmaceutical or regulated environment.
  • Familiar with working with databases, mining, and data architecture fundamentals, including SQL.
  • Knowledge of machine learning methodologies and algorithms.

Please note applications must include your current CV and cover letter which details your key areas of strength / development and why you should be considered for the role.
