Job Title: Senior Assay Scientist

Location: Cambridge ( Biomedical Campus)

Salary: Competitive

Fixed- Term Contract - 12 months

Introduction to role:

Join our Biologics Engineering team at the Discovery Centre, Biomedical Campus, Cambridge UK for a fixed term of 1 year. We are seeking a Senior Assay Scientist to contribute to the discovery and optimisation of biological candidate drugs across all AstraZeneca therapy areas. This is an opportunity to push the boundaries of science and deliver life-changing medicines to patients.

As a Senior Assay Scientist, you will provide critical biochemical and cell assay expertise to deliver multiple biologics drug discovery and technology development projects. This lab-based role involves independent design, execution and interpretation of scientific experiments, and effective communication of findings and recommendations as part of a multi-disciplinary project team. You will also contribute to the identification and development of cutting-edge technologies that benefit biologics drug discovery.

Accountabilities:

  • Independent development of biochemical and cell based 96 or 384 well binding and functional assays for use as biologics screens and pharmacological characterisation of biologics for multiple drug discovery or technology development projects simultaneously, delivering work on time and to budget

  • Active contribution of expertise to multi-disciplinary research drug discovery and technology projects, effectively communicating recommendations and contributing to team decisions

  • Identification and development of new screening and automation technologies and processes

  • Maintaining a well-developed understanding of approaches to biologics drug discovery and applying a broader functional knowledge to support the department

  • Identification of creative solutions to complex assay, technology or drug discovery project problems

  • Leading or contributing to peer reviewed publications, patents and participating at international conferences

  • Providing technical training and supervising members of the team where required

  • Ensuring own work, and work of peers, is compliant with General Laboratory Standard, Safety, Health and Environment standards and all other relevant internal AstraZeneca standards and external regulations

Essential Skills/Experience:

  • PhD with relevant experience or BSc/higher degree with significant proven experience

  • Experience and in-depth technical knowledge of biologics assay development, screening and use of automation

  • Strong team player with good communication skills

  • Ability to solve challenges creatively and a drive to contribute to the development of new and improved assay technologies and processes

Desirable Skills:

  • Knowledge of biologics drug discovery and in vitro pharmacology
