Principal Engineer - Data Management

Location: Filton or Scotstoun, hybrid working available

Salary: Up to £52,371 depending on qualifications and experience

What you’ll be doing:

  • Lead the delivery of the Date Governance/Assurance framework to the Type 26 Programme

  • Lead in the coordination of resources supporting and implementing Data Quality Management and Governance/Assurance initiatives including data owners and stewards

  • Lead in the development of measures for assessing the benefit to the business of data governance and assurance, periodically measuring the effectiveness and feeding it back to senior management

  • Delivery of data governance and assurance awareness and training across the business

  • The creation of the programme’s data models and Information Asset Register

  • Creation of specification documents for new data management requirements

  • Implementation of the 6 Data Principles across the programme

  • Ensuring the resolution of data quality issues are completed and suitable processes are in place to stop repeat of issue by using the FIRM model

Your skills and experiences:

Essential

  • Sound IT Skills

  • Experience in using Data Management / Governance toolsets and implementing Data Governance and Assurance

Desirable

  • Good working knowledge of BI tools, Cognos and Tableau

  • SQL

  • Working within a business with complex engineering projects

Engineers at all levels should possess an academic qualification in Engineering or other related STEM subjects as well as specific (either academic or professional) qualifications and become recognised as Incorporated or Chartered Engineers through an appropriate recognised professional institution. Engineers are encouraged, and will be supported, to achieve the relevant accreditation. Preference will be given to candidates who are already professionally registered.

The team:

A fantastic opportunity has arisen within our Maritime Naval Ships business for a Principal Engineer - Data Management at our site in Filton or Scotstoun.

This role is a key part of the data management team supporting the Type 26 programme which is generating high volumes of data as development of the design of the ship progresses. The Principal Engineer - Data Management will work closely with key stakeholders within the programme and ensure buy identifying the key systems and their data entities in the end-to-end process for product data. Create and maintain functional Information Asset Registers and identify a community of Data Owners, Stewards and Custodians. You will also be responsible for supporting the T26 programme on understanding their data quality issues and providing support and advice on how they are to be resolved. Ultimately the role will drive the business understanding of the data flows and their dependencies. Influencing behavioural change to ensure that data quality and governance becomes embedded in the programme’s culture.

Within this role you will have chance to raise awareness of the importance of data to the business and shape the future of Naval Ships and opportunity to expand DQ & G to a wider scope and new programmes.

You will have excellent communication and presentation skills with the ability to adapt to change and flexible to deadlines and changing requirements. This is an evolving project so willingness to be involved in developing the role and generating new ideas to improve processes and helping the programme succeed. You need to be a strong team player and have a collaborative approach.
