Job title: Design Engineer

Salary: Up to £47,900 (Commensurate with Skills an Experience)

What you’ll be doing:

  • Operating within the functionality of the appropriate tools and techniques for example AutoCAD, Inventor, Foran etc
  • Producing and developing designs in line with specifications and all quality and technical standards
  • Carrying out detail design appraisals in assigned areas to ensure all standards are maintained, taking due cognisance of Designing for Production
  • Carrying out investigations into operational problems or developments, developing and preparing solutions individually or as a member of a team
  • Supporting the development of best practice to increase the capability and performance of tools and processes
  • Identifying your personal training requirements, skills gaps, and development requirements within your discipline
  • Keeping up to date in relevant technical areas, developing skills and capabilities to be able to provide more effective services (seeking and sharing good practice and knowledge to continuously improve practices), and supplying technical support and expertise to others as required
  • Conducting ship trials and surveys

Your skills and experiences:


  • Engineering background (mechanical)
  • Design experience - Producing or working from engineering drawing packs
  • Mechanical Systems experience is required
  • BTEC/ONC qualified or equivalent experience


  • Ship experience (Build or in-service)
  • CAD toolset experience (Or training will be provided)

The Engineering Services Team:

Would you like to play a key role undertaking a defined range of detail design activities in line with all relevant processes and quality requirements? We currently have a vacancy for a Design Engineer at our site in Portsmouth.

As a Design Engineer, you will be supplying advice and support to operations and other functions, ensuring defined objectives are achieved whilst continually maintaining quality and service requirement.

This role will provide you with the opportunity to work in a diverse role in which no two days are the same. You will be working across the entire Royal Naval fleet with scope for career development there will also be opportunities to complete your Chartership (IENG / CENG) and further education. This is an ideal role for someone who is looking to forge a career within Design Engineering.
