Job Title: Engineering Functional Lead

What you’ll be doing:

  • Working across BAE Systems, its Sectors and Lines of Business to develop a common taxonomy and architecture for our engineering capabilities.
  • Develop a working model of this architecture and continuously sustain and improve it
  • Foster cross functional relationships to ensure the architecture interacts appropriately with other functional artefacts (for example IM&T Application Architecture)
  • Support functional Subject Matter Experts to exploit the architecture and support its interaction with their own Sector and Line of Business models.
  • Horizon scan emerging engineering capabilities to ensure they are appropriately reflected within the architecture
  • Ensure the architecture is embedded and utilised within appropriate business processes.
  • Support activities that seek to transformation our functional processes to ensure BAE Systems Engineering capability keeps pace with the rate of technological change.
  • Support engagement with external suppliers to help improve and align our engineering capabilities across all of BAE Systems’ sectors.

Your skills and experiences:


  • A strong understanding of Engineering and its capabilities
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and management skills
  • STEM degree


  • An understanding of wider Systems Engineering principles
  • Experience of architecting tools such as Mood, Sparx EA or CAMEO Systems Modeller or Cameo No Magic.
  • A strong understanding of Architecture principles and processes such as SysML and TOGAF.
  • Experience of data visualisation and data management tools an awareness of Engineering Capability Management

The Engineering Functional Lead team:

As a Engineering Functional Lead, you will have the opportunity to work in a high performing, diverse and distributed team made up of individuals based across the country. You will be working on projects and programmes that have the potential to shape BAE Systems engineering capability for the next decade and help engineers working on a diverse set of deliverables from Submarines to aircraft to data science and analytics services to do their jobs effectively.

The role is an exciting one, presenting the individual with the potential to influence how the BAE Systems Engineering function is shaped for the future and the opportunity to engage across all sectors to secure an appropriate alignment of our engineering capabilities.
