Job Title: Software Development Manager

Location: New Malden (Optional condensed working hours, to be discussed at the interview)

Salary: Up to £ 73,800 depending on qualifications and experience

What you’ll be doing:

  • In consultation with the Submarine Command System (SMCS) Engineering Manager, scope and plan all activities within the remit of the SMCS Software Team
  • Work with the Software Team Leaders to plan, estimate and schedule all detailed activities within their respective Programmes
  • Provide resource solutions for each Programme, balancing priorities as required whilst ensuring staff are appropriately loaded
  • With support from S/W Team Leaders, drive development and testing of SMCS functional capability, within budget, quality and timescale constraints.
  • Bring your experience to own and constantly improve the software estimating activity. Ensure appropriate metrics are recorded and used for current and future improvements
  • Maintain all relevant Software Plans (documents) ensuring updates are made in accordance with Programme requirements

Your skills and experiences:


  • Significant experience in engineering or a defence related industry
  • Ability to operate in a large, complex multi project environment
  • Substantial experience of managing software-intensive, complex real-time systems


  • Experience within a Naval Combat Systems Development Environment
  • Understanding of BAE Systems LCM & the Engineering Lifecycle

The Submarine Command Systems team:

The SMCS Team is the ‘brain’ of the Combat System installed in every class of the UK RN Submarine flotilla. Taking contact observations from all the platform’s sensors, the role of SMCS is to determine and develop a visual and interpretable Tactical Picture to support the Submarine command team in ensuring the Submarine fulfil its mission objectives. The SMCS system provides a range of command team support roles including; tactical picture generation and management, weapon management (tactical deployment guidance and deployment, Oceanography and on-board training facilities for the command team.
