The Head of Social Value, Sustainability and Environment plays a leadership role in developing and implementing comprehensive sustainability, environmental and social value strategies for GBN. You will leverage your in-depth knowledge of sustainability and/or environmental regulations, and social value creation to oversee environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices. You may not be expert in all three areas but a strong knowledge in one or two of these areas and a willingness to develop the others could work.

Day to day duties:

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive sustainability strategy that aligns with organisational goals, environmental regulations, and stakeholder expectations.
  • Lead and manage a team of sustainability professionals, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility and social awareness.
  • Oversee all aspects of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, including waste management, emissions reduction, and community engagement.
  • Stay up-to-date on evolving sustainability trends, regulations, and best practices within the nuclear industry.
  • Proactively identify and assess potential environmental and social risks associated with GBN operations and develop mitigation strategies to minimise negative impacts.
  • Analyse complex sustainability challenges and lead the development of innovative solutions to promote environmental responsibility and social well-being.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the sustainability function, implementing best practices and identifying opportunities to reduce the environmental footprint and enhance social value creation.
  • Collaborate with engineering, operations, and other departments to integrate sustainability considerations into all aspects of GBN's programme.
  • Ensure the organisation operates in accordance with all environmental regulations and permit requirements.
  • Develop and implement robust environmental management systems (EMS) to minimise environmental impact throughout the nuclear lifecycle.
  • Oversee social value creation initiatives and track progress towards meeting social sustainability goals.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators, communities, and environmental NGOs.
  • Lead sustainability reporting efforts, ensuring transparency and clear communication of ESG performance to stakeholders.

.Knowledge, Skills and Experience required:

  • Proven experience in sustainability or social value leadership, with proven experience in a complex industry (or another highly regulated sector) a strong plus.
  • Demonstrated expertise in environmental regulations, social value creation, and sustainability best practices or expertise in one or two and a willingness to develop the other areas.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a proactive approach to identifying and mitigating environmental and social risks.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills, with the ability to build strong relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Proven leadership and team management skills, with the ability to inspire and guide a team to achieve sustainability and social value objectives.
  • Possess a comprehensive understanding of the energy sector, its environmental and social impacts, and sustainability best practices.
  • Knowledge of relevant environmental regulations and permitting processes within the nuclear industry would be a plus.
  • Working knowledge of social value creation frameworks and methodologies for maximising positive societal impacts.
  • Sound understanding of environmental management systems (EMS) and corporate social responsibility (CSR) principles.

Qualifications

  • A degree in Environmental Science, Sustainability, Engineering, or a related field preferred or demonstrable professional experience
