Mott MacDonald's Rolling Stock team is a highly successful centre of excellence for railway rolling stock knowledge, supporting a diverse range of customers including government departments, train owners, train operators and manufacturers of railway rolling stock. The Rolling Stock team is an integral part of Mott MacDonald's Railways division which employs over 350 rail consultants.

The job will ideally be full time, but requests for flexible part-time working would be considered.

For this role you will report to a team leader and be based in one of our Railways offices.

You will be responsible for delivering a broad range of consultancy tasks in the field of railway vehicle electrical systems. This will include writing specifications, undertaking design reviews and system investigations, incident investigation and fault finding.

On occasion you will be required to undertake site visits to inspect rail vehicles and carry out investigations, incorporating findings in detailed formal technical reports or letters.

In addition, you will be responsible for providing general guidance on vehicle electrical systems to both clients and specialist staff within other Mott MacDonald disciplines.

Your role will require you to communicate with key clients and promote Mott MacDonald and its services. This will include the production of proposal documents for new work packages, including estimating the costs required to undertake the activities being proposed.

There may also be a need to travel to other locations (company or client, office or site) within the UK and overseas.

For this vacancy it is essential that you have engineering experience in railway vehicle electrical systems.

Further details of the essential requirements for this job are listed below:

  • Railway vehicle electrical experience across a wide range of systems including the ability to read schematics and use test equipment.
  • Either have or be actively working towards a degree in an electrical engineering discipline.
  • Good knowledge of the rail industry and experience of assessing designs to appropriate UK railway standards.
  • Experience of producing or reviewing design submissions
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Excellent report writing skills.
  • The following are also desirable attributes which may also be useful for the role:
  • Being a Chartered Engineer
  • A working knowledge of other national standards such as Australian and North American.
  • Experience of vehicle testing and electrical investigation.
  • An aptitude and willingness for mentoring less experienced engineers.
