Principal Transport Planner

As a Principal Consultant or Project Principal (depending on experience), you will be an integral member of the established team in our Bristol office. You will be involved in planning for new developments both helping to gain planning consents and assisting in delivering developments as well as developing transport policy and strategy. You will be responsible for the management and delivery of major multi-disciplinary transport projects together with team development and management, business development and customer liaison.

A key part of the role will be to further develop relationships with clients and working in multi-disciplinary teams where Mott MacDonald provides a variety of engineering, environment, transport planning, costing and related services. Internal networking and collaboration with other parts of Mott MacDonald will be critical.
The role will provide an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic professional to demonstrate their already well-developed knowledge and provide opportunities to further develop project management and client relationship skills.

Responsibilities of the role will include:

  • Undertaking technical analysis, deriving key findings and reporting results;
  • Specifying and managing feasibility studies, preparing reports and presentations
  • Undertaking and managing Transport Assessments, Travel Plans , Transport Input into Environmental Statements, Delivery and Servicing Plans, Parking Management and Delivery Plans, Construction and Logistics Plans and other development planning related documents;
  • Liaison with highway and planning authorities and advise relating to S106/S278 agreements;
  • Leading negotiations with local and national highway and planning authorities.
  • Liaison with key clients and responsibility for developing effective relationships with internal and external organisations
  • Involvement in the tendering process for new work and identification of market opportunities
  • Managing teams and supervising junior staff on projects including transport aspects of developments and major transport and utility infrastructure
  • Project and financial management of projects
  • Ensuring quality delivery to industry and client standards and Mott MacDonald best practice guidelines and quality assurance procedures

Required for the position of Project Principal- Development Planning;

  • A degree or HNC/HND in a relevant subject
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution
  • Substantive in-depth technical, project management and delivery, customer liaison and commercial experience, probably gained over a substantial period with private and/or public-sector organisations, preferably with a consultancy
  • Experience in taking responsibility and leading the delivery of the transport planning elements of major and complex new build development and transport infrastructure proposals
  • Experience of successful negotiation with highways and planning authorities
  • A strong track record of successful business development
  • Good team management, communication and interpersonal skills
  • A commitment to providing high quality solutions and advice to clients
  • Capable of building strong customer relationships, developing business, motivating and developing staff and raising our profile

You must also be able to demonstrate:

  • Relevant experience within a consultancy or local authority environment
  • Knowledge of the current UK transport policy context and the ability to utilise this knowledge through projects and client interaction
  • Excellent report writing and other written and numerical presentation skills.
  • Strong communication skills, both within project teams and when in a client environment
  • An ability to apply sound analytical and numeric skills to project work
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to maintain good client relationships
  • Experience in contributing to proposals and winning new work
  • An ability to solve complex problems and identify new innovative solutions
  • Ability to work within larger multi-disciplinary project teams across Mott MacDonald.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement and innovation across transport planning.
  • Willingness to work simultaneously on a number of projects and flexible to work with different teams around our UK and overseas offices.

This senior role will support the ongoing growth of our transport planning team, with specific focus on development planning, within our Bristol office.
You will be part of the senior team responsible for business development, customer liaison and project delivery - supporting our local team and Consents technical discipline lead. You will also support team development and management, providing technical and project management and / or directorship. The role will require close working with all parts of the Transport Planning business and wider collaboration with other key disciplines within the region.

We help conceive, drive, and implement transport solutions for cities, regions, and asset owners/operators around the globe. From preparing the business case and​ advising on related issues - such as revenue, procurement, and environmental legislation - to delivering the completed infrastructure and helping maintain it. Our planning, engineering, environmental and management skills cover the whole project cycle. We play a major role in developing and delivering the Global Transport Sector Strategy.
