The Principal Consultant will primarily be office-based, with occasional travel required to attend meetings in other offices, including client offices, and site visits across the UK. You will be based in any one of Mott MacDonald's Altrincham, Bristol, Leeds, London or Southampton offices. The position will be based in the UK, but it may involve occasional international travel and the potential for providing overseas project inputs.

In addition, you will:

  • Support the team with the development, growth and continued success of our UK Environmental Permitting services across a number of industry sectors, such as waste, energy and water.
  • Provide technical expertise and advice in relation to environmental permitting, management and compliance, associated with the various environmental permitting regimes across the UK, within client organisations across all sectors, including water, waste, and energy.
  • Work across the diverse portfolios of our high-profile clients and contribute to the implementation of projects across large and complex estates and processes.
  • Be an excellent team player, with the ability to work independently when required, with a proactive and positive attitude and be confident in liaising and working effectively within a wider multi-disciplinary project team, as well as with our clients and regulators. There may be a requirement to work on client sites or other Mott MacDonald office locations as the workload requires.
  • Support the team in the preparation of proposals, scoping technical solutions, fee estimates and assisting with the identification of prospects.
  • Contribute to and project manage waste projects in a growing UK and international market and within an increasing number of sector opportunities.
  • Provide practical support and deliver projects that will improve the performance of our client organisations in relation to the various aspects of environmental, waste and resource management.
  • Be able to deliver high quality project work, have excellent report writing, technical reviewing and communication skills and an attention to detail. Provide all project deliverables to a high standard and delivered in compliance with Mott MacDonald's business process.

Candidate Specification

You should have an undergraduate or master's degree in civil engineering, environmental sciences/management, sustainability or other related disciplines with further specialist qualifications in solid waste management or waste regulation. You will be chartered or working towards chartership.

  • You will also have significant project management experience with a strong emphasis on waste regulation and compliance both nationally and internationally and will be required to work on projects that feature:
  • Permitting and consenting of waste and wastewater facilities;
  • Associated environmental legislation such as waste duty of care, IED and MCPD and broader regulatory compliance;
  • Environmental impact assessment;
  • Regulatory and technical due diligence;
  • Waste policy, legislative and regulatory frameworks; and Resource efficiency, waste, and materials management.
  • You will have a strong track record in building close working relationships with technical teams, colleagues, clients and regulators.
  • Experience in working in the waste management sector, with clients or partners in the regulatory sector, is advantageous as will a background in consultancy or environmental regulation.
  • Demonstrable practical experience and technical knowledge of the environmental permitting regulations and related environmental legislation is essential.

The position will be based in the UK, but it will involve travelling within the UK and also overseas on occasional international projects. Therefore, overseas experience is highly desirable.
