We are looking for a Project Director with a track record of delivering complex multi-disciplinary schemes from scheme development through to Design and Build to join our highways leadership team. This is a great opportunity to play a senior role in our successful highways business and help shape our future direction in the UK, playing a part in our transition towards delivering highways as part of a net-zero economy.

Mott MacDonald's Highways & Intelligent Transport Systems Division delivers services across the entire project lifecycle to clients such as National Highways, Transport Scotland, Welsh Government and Local Authorities and Contractors. You will be responsible for project team leadership, technical delivery, and business development for multi-million-pound fees. Your primary role will be as Project Director for major highways projects across the UK, but on occasion internationally. You'll also play a leading role in client engagement and leading bids to secure future major project opportunities that will deliver our ambitious growth targets whilst meeting the objectives of our clients and their customers. In managing project teams, you'll instigate and develop a culture of collaborative delivery, and continuously improve the efficiency of our projects aligned with Project 13 objectives.

Your responsibilities will mean that you will:

  • Lead profitable projects that deliver success for our clients and communities, safely
  • Develop a collaborative delivery approach across project teams, supply chain, partners, and client teams
  • Deliver to budget, programme, and quality
  • Enhance client satisfaction
  • Undertake Project Reviews to foster continuous improvement and sharing lessons across projects
  • Guide major project bids securing our right to win, delivering customer needs and a competitive commercial strategy
  • Work in collaboration with Account Leaders to position for and capture major bid opportunities
  • In this role, you'll be accountable for:
  • Championing industry leading techniques to improve safety and customer service to deliver the goals of our clients and their customers
  • Delivery of projects to time, cost, and quality
  • Fostering innovation in the delivery of design, digital and technical excellence
  • Prompt billing and payment
  • Monthly reporting on scheme progress
  • Delivering client requirements and customer satisfaction

Essential competencies / skills:

  • Extensive experience of delivering major design projects in a director role
  • Delivery of Design and Build projects and significant experience working with Contractors
  • Delivery of ECI projects (including public consultation / statutory procedures / inquiries and Examinations)
  • Practical knowledge and understanding of Project 13 - a new approach to delivering high performing infrastructure
  • UK and international standards including DMRB / SHW / RWSC / AASHTO / Australian design standards is desirable
  • Project, financial, programme and resource management skills
  • Management of large project teams (over 100 members)
  • Ability to deliver to demanding schedules and targets
  • Proven business development and marketing skills with demonstrable experience of writing winning proposals
  • Strong communication skills to be able to communicate targets, and priorities to staff, clients and partners

Additionally, due to the nature of our work, it is desirable to be flexible in working location where the need arises. If you have experience of project directing major highways projects, we'd very much like to hear from you. Any candidate that has strong relevant technical expertise with the ability to develop relationships with clients and partners at a senior level will likely be of interest.

Academic, professional qualifications and experience:

Minimum qualifications:

  • BEng / BSc civil engineering (or related subject)
  • Chartered Engineer (or equivalent)
  • Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (or equivalent)

Desirable qualifications

  • MEng / MSc civil engineering (or related subject)
  • Prince2 Practitioner / APM PMQ
