The Applied Sciences team uses fundamental science to support early stage and proof of concept projects, ultimately answering the question, “Is this possible?” For this we need scientists who want to go further than just asking questions by actually building prototypes and working in multi-disciplinary teams to realise solutions.

Job Description

Applied Sciences Makes a Difference

As part of a wide multi-disciplinary team, our Applied Science engineers & scientists recently developed a new invitro diagnostic platform. This involved multiple technical inputs including hardware design, prototype and test. Activities for the medical electronics engineer included design and sourcing of the electronic components and control electronics, and then working with test and software teams to build the components into the system, commission, troubleshoot and test the system against the requirements.

The team built and commissioned a 9-channel optical instrument capable of taking two types of optical measurements from samples, at up to 6 different wavelengths. The control electronics were capable of controlling a number of different system operations including fluidic sample handling, detector & LED control, data acquisition and noise reduction. The team proved the feasibility of the system on a simplified test-bed, and then developed multiple working prototypes to facilitate verification & validation of the the system, and bringing it to market as an invitro diagnostic device.

Qualifications

To rise to the challenge this Medical Electronics role brings, you will have a practical and detailed understanding of electronic engineering, with an emphasis on practical applications.

You will be capable of designing your own electronic devices, comfortable testing them and using them for medical, diagnostic or commercial purposes, and then developing these into real products

We are also looking for:

  • An advanced degree and strong technical background in electronic engineering or physics

  • Practical knowledge of designing, building, and testing electronic components for use in medical applications and related devices

  • A strong track record of contributing to, and leading, bringing medical devices and related products to market

  • Prior experience with products such as wearable electronics, autoinjectors, connected devices, in vitro diagnostics

  • Experience working across multi-disciplinary projects, using skills from outside your core competencies and taking a flexible approach to complex problem solving

  • Interest in applying the principles of physics and/or biophysics to test and improve electronic designs and components
