Job and responsibilities

The Enterprise Analytics and Data team has the ambition to transform Philip Morris into a company where decision-making process is driven by data. As part of this team, we are looking for a Principal Architect, Enterprise Data who is highly experienced with creating best of breed domain data structures) and establishing a process framework for assessing model maturity within our business functions and deriving relevant outcomes to enable and accelerate analytics delivery.

The day-to-day responsibilities are to be carried out against the backdrop of a cloud-based Business Intelligence data and analytics platform supported by state-of-the-art technologies (AWS, Wherescape, Snowflake) and methodologies (Data Vault 2.0, SAFe, Scrum) enabling key transformation initiatives; therefore a sound technology background is imperative.

We are looking for an innovative problem solver, with a track record of leading change using data architecture to align with the evolving needs of our internal collaborators as well as partnering with the wider organization to shape and disrupt markets through adoption and innovation of cloud technologies.

This role requires an individual with personal drive, a desire to roll up their sleeves and make things happen; an individual with exceptional attention to detail who is highly resilient, thrives in a fast-paced and high-profile environment while leading through ambiguity to address complex and large challenges while applying domain focus.

Ideally, the experienced principal data architect will have a deep knowledge of modeling methodologies (Inmon, Kimball, Data Vault) applied in a fast moving, complex data and technology landscape.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead a team of domain data architects who are responsible for entire business units across the globe and provide leadership and assistance.
  • Support and Advise partners in managing major business processes from an architecture perspective as and when necessary.
  • Demonstrates advanced knowledge of one or more industries, trends, solutions.
  • Collaborates/confers with all customers in the strategic design process and translates business needs into data architecture (domain) design.
  • Review, approve and take ownership of the overall domain design specification for business units under their supervision.
  • Represent domain data architecture team at various inter & intra body meetings and committees.
  • Develops and maintains outstanding data architecture leadership within the practice area.
  • Builds Trusted Advisor relationships with customers at the most senior executive level.
  • Drive thought leadership for our partners – identify industry and technical adoption patterns, define resolution, and determine how to scale across our customer portfolio using our domain data models.
  • Simplify complex concepts for common understanding across key partners including technical and business decision makers focusing primarily on reusability, modularity and scale of our designs.
  • Demonstrate impactful communications to bridge perspectives, synthesize opinions, and credibly drive consensus for data architecture direction.
  • Build partnerships and trusted relationships with the leaders of key product & engineering groups and industry cloud teams inspiring them to delivery essential features and capabilities in support of critical customer product needs through influence of their roadmap prioritization.
  • Advise on opportunities to delivery early impact by moving innovation from concept into production in collaboration with product/engineering teams, industry teams, and other ecosystem partners.
  • Build a thriving engaged data architecture community to share industry/technical challenges – bringing industry and complimentary industry leaders together to discuss next generation challenges for which research and investment need to be started.
  • Advisory role with responsibility for investigation, analysis and improvement of business processes to support data architecture design and planning for analytics delivery.
  • Support creation of Business Case for submission at budgets and spend reviews in cognizance of financial and timescale limitations vis-à-vis domain data models and data architecture roadmap
  • Support Benefits realization assessments & post-implementation reviews of projects vis-à-vis BPM
  • Provides domain expertise in how business capabilities interact with data design capabilities to address client business problems and achieve client goals.
  • Ensure alignment and close cooperation with the business and IT functions including the Data Governance organization to ensure compliance and consistency of business processes to PMI technology and governance standards.

Other requirements
  • Knowledge of data modeling tools and methodologies (Power Designer, ER Studio).
  • Experience of working with broader architecture community (EA, SA, DA)
  • Good hands-on knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases.
  • Good hands-on knowledge of Master data and Reference data domains.
  • Experience with Microservices architecture patterns in an API centric environment.
  • Working knowledge of cloud native architectures.
  • Working knowledge of designing domain data models in a technology domain such as distributed internet-scale web or mobile applications, Big Data, analytics, Machine Learning, enterprise workloads (SAP, VMware, Windows etc.), high-performance databases (SQL and/or NoSQL), complex networking
implementations, highly secured workloads etc.

Preferred Requirements:
  • Self-starter with strong analytical and problem-solving skills from a business perspective.
  • Good interpersonal, leadership, organizational and project management skills
  • Evangelist and Advocate for Data across the organization
  • Experience with SAFe methodology is a plus
  • Knowledge about BI and Big DATA ecosystems (S3, Scala, Spark) is a plus
  • Maintains awareness of trends, best practices and standards for the industry
  • Provides leadership and mentorship to less experienced personnel.

Qualifications and education requirements
  • 12-15 years of data architecture experience
  • Experience working directly with client business processes
  • Bachelor or master’s in computer sciences, information management, or any similar field requiring business architecture and analytics
  • Very good communication skills and solid ability to engage at different levels in the organization.
  • Work with business partners to translate business strategy into data architecture artefacts.
  • Work with IS/IT partners to gather technical realities and map this to the business need.
  • Highly collaborative mindset.
  • Fluent in English.
