About the Role
Base Location: Flexible, however our preference is that you will be based in one of our key UK or Ireland sites, which includes but is not limited to:- Glasgow, Perth, Aberdeen, Inverness, Reading, Havant, London or Dublin
Salary: £55,200- £83,000 + performance-related bonus + a range of benefits to support your finances, wellbeing and family.

The Senior Sustainability Manager will be responsible for defining, guiding and delivering SSE Thermal’s sustainability strategy, reporting to the Head of Corporate Affairs and Sustainability (Thermal). The role holder will operate across a breadth of topics, including climate change, economic and social impact, blending strategy and delivery.
You will collaborate with SSE Group Sustainability colleagues to ensure group-level standards are delivered within Thermal, and that Thermal is represented and considered appropriately in overall Group approach.
You will be the Thermal lead for embedding sustainability in Large Capital Projects, implementation of the Just Transition Strategy, delivery against the Net Zero Transition Plan and sustainability disclosures.
The Senior Sustainability Manager will provide leadership on sustainability issues within the Thermal business, ensuring guidance is provided on all matters related to the business unit’s climate change, economic and social impacts, including to business/project directors and members of the Thermal Executive Committee.
The role holder will work with the Thermal Corporate Affairs and Regulation teams to support advocacy, policy development, stakeholder engagement and comms, with a focus on delivering the solutions needed to deliver the net zero transition and SSE’s strategy.
The role holder will also seek to identify and develop future opportunities to enhance SSE Thermal’s positive sustainability impacts, supporting the ESG investment case for the SSE Group and enhancing SSE’s reputation as a progressive partner of governments, regulators and wider stakeholders.
What do I need?
To be considered for this role, we would love you to have:
- Educated to a high standard, preferably a degree in an analytical discipline and/or combined with sustainability work experience
- A familiarity with international and national sustainability frameworks and an ability to interpret them into a business context.
- A track record of shaping and influencing stakeholders and organisations and an ability to effectively manage many complex projects with a comprehensive understanding of sustainability in a corporate context.
- A broad understanding of the power sector in the UK or Ireland.
- An understanding of decarbonisation pathways for the power sector, sustainability (social and climate) in a corporate context.
- A familiarity with disclosure requirements including ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) strategies and emerging sustainability requirements in the UK and Europe.
