Role purpose and overview

Based in London, this role presents an exciting opportunity to help to grow the Telegraph’s US audience and convert it into subscriptions. As the US Website & App Editor, you’ll ensure that the Telegraph’s editorial staff are publishing journalism that is of interest to the US audience, and present our stories in the most engaging and appealing manner on a bespoke US web homepage and app front page.

Key responsibilities

  • Work with the Assistant Editor and other senior editors to support commissioning of journalism that will be of interest to a US audience.
  • Work with digital publishing editors across news, lifestyle, business, sport, video, pictures and design/graphics channels to ensure they produce content in a timely manner for the US, and to the highest standards.
  • Work with our publishing teams to support the curation of existing articles that will be of interest to a US audience.
  • Working closely with the Homepage & App Editor, manage the US version of the Telegraph web and app homepages so that they reflect the best of the Telegraph’s journalism for a US audience.
  • Ensure is an entertaining and informative platform in the US - with the best possible headlines, pictures and visual assets at all times.
  • Manage the US app notifications strategy, and liaise with Apple News and other developing third-party platforms to ensure the right content is supplied and promoted.
  • Work with the US SEO and Social Media Managers to ensure that relevant articles are promoted off-site in the most effective way, building audience and community.
  • Immerse yourself in data analytics that show what the US audience is reading when, where and how - and ensure that others understand how this information can improve their output.
  • Attend conferences to help drive the US agenda on a daily and weekly basis.
  • Lead efforts to achieve the Telegraph’s ambitious targets for audience and subscriber growth in the US.
  • Work closely with our overnight operation in the US and Australia to ensure strong daily handovers in both the morning and evening.

Key skills

  • A digital editor with significant experience at national level.
  • Outstanding news judgement.
  • Awareness of what the US audience is interested in reading, and the competitor set in the US.
  • A deep understanding of Homepages, how they operate and how to write incredible headlines.
  • Significant experience of digital reporting and publishing, including telling stories in creative ways.
  • Command of analytics tools and how these influence homepage decisions.
  • Understanding and experience of the different content types that make up a diverse website such as
  • Understanding of photo, video and graphical journalism and how they can be used to develop a website.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with executive editors, heads of departments and senior journalists.
  • Experience of subscription-based strategy.
