Role purpose and overview

The Telegraph needs an experienced editor and publisher to oversee the promotion of its journalism across all outlets in order to help the business achieve its ambitious subscription targets. The role involves working closely with senior editors across the newsroom and with the marketing department to ensure that the right content is promoted in the right way to the right audience at the right time. The Heads of our Newsletters, Social Media and Community teams will report to you, as will the Puzzles Audience Development Manager.

Key responsibilities

  • Liaise closely with senior commissioning editors and senior publishing editors across all areas of the newsroom to understand and help identify priorities for concerted promotional effort across our main marketing touchpoints.
  • Work with the Publishing Editor, who coordinates the publishing schedule and plan across the newsroom so that key articles and other editorial projects are pushed at times when they can reach the biggest audience in the most effective way. This includes how best to promote evergreen content.
  • Work with the Performance team and use the Telegraph’s suite of analytics to inform decision-making as to how to optimise subscription growth through content promotion.
  • Oversee promotion and performance across our off-platform organic channels, including our newsletters and existing and emerging platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, Reddit, YouTube, LinkedIn, Apple News and Yahoo.
  • Work with the marketing department on how we promote our journalism across our marketing channels, including email, paid search, paid social and in the newspaper.
  • Work with the social media team, continuing to develop our strategy for the purposes of driving off-platform engagement and subscriptions.
  • Work with the newsletters team, continuing to develop our portfolio to engage our subscribers and grow the subscriber base.
  • Work with the community team, developing new ways of facilitating interaction among our subscribers and between our journalists and our subscribers.
  • Develop new ideas and strategies with editors and with the marketing department as to how we can use our journalism to showcase the Telegraph to potential new subscribers, and how we can increase subscribers' perceived value of their subscription

Key skills

  • A digital editor with significant senior experience.
  • Outstanding news judgment.
  • Awareness of what the Telegraph subscriber and prospective audience is interested in reading.
  • A deep understanding of how to write brilliant headlines and sells.
  • Significant experience of digital publishing, including telling stories in creative ways.
  • Command of analytics tools and how these influence promotional decisions.
  • Understanding and experience of the different content types that make up a diverse website such as telegraph.co.uk.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with executive editors, heads of departments and senior journalists.
  • Experience of subscription-based strategy.
