Description of role:

TWI is a world-leading independent engineering research and technology organisation. A new opportunity has arisen within our Technology Innovation Management team in the Innovation and Skills Directorate.

We are looking to recruit a Principal Project Leader who will operate across TWI stakeholders in the Teesside region of the UK. This role would be ideal for a person with a technical and research/innovation background, whilst also being confident in stakeholder engagement, business development and consultancy delivery.

This role involves conducting desktop research to develop an understanding of research trends and drivers within technical thematic areas (including, but not limited to, net-zero and circular economy), scouting for organisations (in particular SME’s) within the region that would respond to collaborative research challenges, broker relationships between higher education institutions and the private sector, and initiate collaborative research opportunities that are of mutual benefit to both sectors/parties. The successful candidate must therefore work effectively and independently on charting technical thematic area developments, understanding and developing relationships with stakeholders in the Teesside region with suitable profiles, and essentially engaging them in a network of common interests. However, the successful candidate, will also go further, and once having engaged suitable organisations/stakeholders, develop business opportunities for TWI whereby innovation and research consultancy is delivered within this same role. Thus, this role requires the effective market analysis, stakeholder engagement, brokerage and business development skills, as well as innovation-savviness to deliver consultancy offerings to TWI customers.

Travel:

Desktop research and stakeholder scouting activities may be performed in a hybrid-working arrangement. However, as this role would also involve face-to-face meetings with Clients, organisation of/attendance to workshops and event, the role requires frequent travel within the Teesside region, combined with working from TWI’s offices in Middlesbrough. Further UK travel may also be required.

If this position is to be based in our Port Talbot office it will be part of an initiative known as AEMRI (Advanced Engineering Materials Research Institute), which is funded by the Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO) using European Regional Development Funds (ERDF). If this position is to be based in our Middlesbrough office it will part of an initiative known as Centre for Materials Integrity which is part funded by the Tees Valley Combined Authority (TVCA) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
