Here you will use your pyrotechnics knowledge and capabilities running a flexible design team to generate novel designs or further develop older designs of pyrotechnic countermeasures in order to fulfil new COGT project requirements. These designs will be developed using the methodologies set out in the FPCMS Team Design Manual, for which DAOS Accreditation has been received from the Military Aviation Authority. You will specify the testing regimes required to provide assurance of performance of the developed countermeasures to a point where they are ready for entry into the spiral development program where Industrial partners will begin the productionisation process to full-scale manufacture to enable qualification and acceptance for use on designated MOD Air Platforms.

Job description

In this role you will
  • The safe practical handling of explosive substances and manufacture of explosive articles to a supervisory level.
  • The writing of fit for purpose method statements with suitable and sufficient safety risk assessment.
  • The Reviewing and ultimately providing technical sign-off of method statements and safety risk assessments written by other members of the team.
  • Arranging and managing or conducting explosives trials to assess materials’ or stores’ performances.
  • Applying ISO9000 type quality management systems.
  • Literature searching and generating research or development programs of work with estimated timelines.
  • Using your knowledge of design of experiment (DOE) techniques to enable efficient design development and design troubleshooting.
  • Using your wide knowledge of explosive and pyrotechnic substances and articles especially the safety assessment relating to the DOSG S3 criteria and providing of advice on such things to other DSTL Teams, Groups or Divisions.
  • Assessing relevant data in order to evaluate pyrotechnic composition and full countermeasure safety and performance.
  • Presenting results to, and liaison with internal and external customers and to industrial partners.
  • Liaison with ETG and CTS Leadership Teams.

    Responsibilities

We are looking for someone who has
  • The safety of the team members and others who may be affected by the tasks you carry out or are responsible for.
  • Supervision of employees handling explosive substances and manufacturing explosive articles.
  • Project/work package leadership.
  • Design and development of explosives stores to the FPCMS Team Design Manual.
  • Safety risk assessment (explosives/pyrotechnics preferably).
  • Writing clear method instructions.
  • Reviewing Technical Documentation - MS/RA and quality documentation included and provision of technical sign-off as required.
  • Keeping abreast of new technologies and applying useful new ideas to pyrotechnic countermeasure systems.

Work location
Dstl is strongly encouraging blended and flexible working either at one of our sites or from home or both. We want to empower you to undertake your duties at the most appropriate location for the task, however you will be allocated a Dstl site as a base. You may be required to travel to other Dstl and MoD sites as required.
