Job Summary

Monitors, researches and analyzes ESG developments that impact Aflac Incorporated and its subsidiaries (the Company). Supports global ESG efforts by planning, monitoring, keeping team members on task, executing and controlling the quality and the process for reporting ESG data and responses to the agencies, non-governmental agencies and others who rate or score the Company. Coordinates and compiles the preparation of materials for the global ESG Working Group and the Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability Committee of Aflac Incorporated’s Board of Directors. Serves as global liaison with other departments demonstrating cultural and institutional insight to ensure successful and on-time completion of global projects. Becomes an internal subject matter expert on ESG for the Company, especially on environmental issues.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Coordinates global efforts for a successful and on-time completion of projects and tasks associated with calculating greenhouse gas emissions (GHG), responding to ESG surveys, publishing Aflac Incorporated’s Business and Sustainability Report and transitioning to net zero emissions, by drawing timelines, identifying key stakeholders, assigning tasks and obtaining agreement from assignees, monitoring the progress, and providing updates to team members and management

  • Collaborates, consults and takes an active role in the planning and development of ESG communications including the Business and Sustainability Report, Sustainability Bond Report, ESG portion of the Company’s website, TCFD Report and other ESG communications, including the writing, editing, tracking and securing approvals

  • Facilitates meetings to calculate and report greenhouse gas emissions by preparing meeting agendas, leading the meetings and providing minutes

  • Engages actively in regular ESG meetings with the Vice President, Investor and Rating Agency Relations, ESG; Corporate Secretary; Director, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and others to ensure alignment and timely completion of ESG tasks and projects

  • Maintains process documentation and related historical records of reports, submissions, working group meetings, and other relevant ESG material

  • Provides liaison support for global internal stakeholders to fill in the communication and cultural gaps as needed to enable efficient and effective collaborations

  • Researches and shares findings on environmental, social and governance trends that may have a significant impact on the Company, including evolving standards and market practice

  • Supports the engagement of investors stewardship teams on matters related to ESG

  • Provides general supports for ESG leadership as needed

  • Acts as a global coordinator with both internal and external resources, as needed, and related to ESG projects or work flows for the Company

  • Required to work outside of normal office hours of 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. to accommodate time differences between U.S. and Japan

  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned

Education & Experience Required

  • Bachelor’s Degree in in a related discipline
  • Six years of professional work-related experience, preferably in insurance or other financial industry

Or an equivalent combination of education and experience

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Careful attention to detail for constant monitoring and evaluation of projects’ progress and factchecking tasks to ensure timely completion

  • Strong interpersonal communication skills to facilitate global meetings, engage all members to accomplish tasks as scheduled, and interact effectively and exercise discretion, judgment, and diplomacy when dealing with internal and external customers, and executive management

  • Capable of working as a team member and building strong and effective relationships with diverse, cross-functional and multi-level participants both internally and externally

  • Experience and proficiency using Microsoft Office software, including advanced proficiency in Excel and Word
