Search and Discovery team is looking for a thoughtful and versatile leader who can go technically deep, lead, and grow a strong group of software engineers who help build Expedia's Search Platform. You will drive the development of a scalable platform that will form the backbone of our vision of Travel Search. You will collaborate with top-notch machine learning scientists and engineers to build high-quality production code. You ideally have a track record of shipping multiple high scale solutions and providing technical leadership. What you’ll do:

Challenges you will work on:

  • Design and develop business-critical backend systems

  • Establish architectural principles, select design patterns, and then mentor members on their appropriate application

  • Be comfortable with proactive outward communication and technical leadership and never shy away from a challenge.

  • Lead your products, with a focus on DevOps and robust automation

  • Adopt change, always open to replacing what you built yesterday with something better today.

  • Partner with the business to have a clear understanding of how the technology stack is tied to business outcomes and our bottom line

  • Breakdown work into different phases and prioritize in partnership with product management peers

  • Anticipate and recognize bottlenecks in work processes between teams and makes suggestions for ongoing improvement

  • Advocate for operational excellence (such as unit testing, CI/CD, establishing SLAs, programming for resiliency and scalability)

  • Convey the right information to ensure that proposals for improvements are given the proper consideration and technical issues are resolved in a timely manner

  • Remain informed on new advances in engineering methodologies. Examine inefficiencies in the existing stack operation and encourage engineers to improve them

  • Bridge the gap in discussions between technology and non-technology personnel. Report on team status and listen for suggestions to improve lagging project work

  • Mentor employees and managers by providing advice and recommendations based on your own experience and learnings

Who you are:

  • Graduate degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Informatics, Information Systems, or another quantitative field.

  • 8+ years of experience in a Software Engineer role, with at least 3+ years managing teams of 8-10 people, including hiring, coaching, and growing

  • Strong knowledge of backend API development

  • Experience with object-oriented/object function scripting languages: Kotlin, Python, Java, Scala, etc.

  • Experience with micro service architecture, and design.

  • Excellent problem solving and analytic skills associated with working on unstructured datasets

  • Experienced in delivering real data feedback loops and streams for supporting highly available and scalable solutions with large transaction volume on a 24x7 operational cycle

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior management to collect requirements, describe software product features and review technical designs

  • Experience in planning/execution - estimating, scheduling, and executing on committed schedules
