Data Scientist II

An established performer who consistently applies analytics capabilities, principles and playbooks to solve business issues and opportunities, with a moderate level of guidance and direction.

What you’ll do:

  • Applies a range of common statistical methods to business problems

  • Determines the ideal method for the problem considering underlying assumptions

  • Understands limitations of selected methods

  • Understands both frequentist and Bayesian statistics

  • Solidly understands hypothesis testing

  • Designs complex experiments

  • Applies common methods such as linear and non-linear regression, multivariate analysis, etc.

  • Understands model design and can explain selection, including general approach, choice of algorithm and data sources

  • Engages with research community and can make recommendations and apply concepts to current projects

  • Demonstrates understanding of business domain and can recommend model changes, constantly evolving information and requirements

  • Selects valid approaches, appropriate in terms of level of effort, favoring iterative delivery that solves for the objective, not the ask (i.e. not just order-taking)

  • Demonstrates an understanding of functional technical information (e.g. user flows, technical system design and workflows)

  • Knows and applies data visualization principles consistently resulting in clear and consistent outcomes

  • Builds complex charts with limited supervision

  • Consistently uses color palettes effectively and is aware of double encoding and end user fatigue

  • Creates clear and consistent visualizations with experienced use of typography

  • Is familiar with UX and UI concepts, such as padding, framing, chart placement, white space balance and hierarchy of elements.

  • Knows EG visualization tools well, and is able to create complex calculations using advanced features

  • Clearly and confidently articulates decision-making rationale, solutions, methodologies and frameworks to team members and both technical and non-technical partners.

  • Anticipates and assists team members in the creation of routine technical communication materials (e.g. policies & procedures, guidelines, presentations, messages).

  • Proactively contributes to cross team collaboration ensuring the best available information is included and shares findings with peers and leaders.

  • Considers the audience's needs and context when crafting solutions or presenting ideas and is able to identify how the needs of different audiences may differ

    • Influences action and results, through clear writing, in an accessible way for a wide audience. Structures presentations around a clear narrative and is concise in what's included. Presents clearly and engagingly and anticipates questions

Who you are:

  • Has experience in the fundamentals of big data architecture (streaming events, data lakes, analytics engines) and relational database models

  • Applies knowledge of intermediate SQL such as: CASE WHEN THEN BREAK END, subqueries, UNION, use of variables (set, declare), use of built-in functions

  • Optimizes (for cost and performance) the extraction of data from multiple data sources and combine into the required datasets for model building or analytics

  • Demonstrates extensive knowledge of the data available, data that should be available, the data generation process, and the importance of data quality. Finds and raises data issues to resolution. Is go-to person for questions on particular datasets

  • Conducts exploratory data profiling techniques, produce crosstabs, common summary descriptive statistics, etc.

  • Has experience writing code in a way that enables efficient and accurate translation into a data pipeline

  • Demonstrates capability of framing challenging business problems as an analytics problem and concrete set of analytical tasks

  • Displays strong domain (i.e. travel, online retail) knowledge, business acumen (understanding the underlying business objectives), curiosity and critical reasoning skills.

  • Picks analytically valid approaches, appropriate in terms of level of effort, favoring iterative delivery that solves for the objective, not the ask (i.e. not just order-taking). Uses strong understanding of the business problem space to inform the design of the solution

  • Manages stakeholders with frequent communication, expectation management, meeting deadlines and minimizing surprises. Manages backlog well. Delivers projects to maximize business impact and in-sync with wider timing of the business. Focuses on the 80:20. Is creative and persistent in the face of roadblocks

  • Influences action and results through clear writing, in an accessible way for a wide audience. Structures presentations around a clear narrative, and is concise in what's included. Presents clearly and engagingly and anticipates questions

  • Automates repeated measurement and reporting tasks and builds scalable dashboards to cover multiple scenarios (geo, web and apps, etc.). Trains and empowers stakeholders to pull data from automated dashboards or via scheduled reports. Empowers data democracy by providing training to stakeholders on basic use of analytics tools and solutions
