Division Overview

Hubbell Power Systems (HPS) engages in the design and manufacture of a wide variety of products used by utilities. Today, HPS is deeply engaged in product solutions for OSP Communication utility purposes, and has been actively growing that segment of the business. HPS roots have historically been in high voltage transmission, distribution, substation, underground products used by electric utilities. HPS products are also used in the civil construction, transportation, gas and water industries.

Director of Product Development

Hubbell Power Systems, Inc. has an opening for a Director of Product Development which is a 100% Remote position.

Manage and lead enterprise-level and segment-level new product development (NPD) projects for Hubbell and identify opportunities associated with research and development of new technologies in the areas of grid automation, switchgear, sensing, communication, control, analytics, and other key smart grid technologies. Develop the product and technology roadmap for Hubbell’s Grid Protection & Controls division in order align various research and development (R&D) and new product development (NPD) efforts across the organization towards a common technology platform and ecosystem. Gather project requirements from client/customers, internal experts across the enterprise, industry consultants and published industry information. Develop technical project specifications including compliance requirements for products in accordance to IEEE, IEC, NEMA, FCC and other industry standards. Review and approve business case, budgets and cost estimates for NPD projects by reviewing revenue projections, capital investment related to manufacturing tooling and equipment, operating expenses related to compliance testing, overall project plan and timeline including engineering resource requirements, recruitment plans. Analyze project feasibility by reviewing product demand, technical specifications, technology requirements, engineering resource needs, manufacturing capabilities and technical support capabilities. Support active NPD projects in real time by generating technical insights to correct the course of development and utilize rapid lean start-up (LSU) style customer-learning cycle techniques. Support recruitment, placement, and onboarding of engineering resources for new projects and help develop engineering support organizational structure and process for new products post launch. Develop detailed reports, technical presentations and project toll gate approval presentations for senior management including C-level executives and business partners. Maintain regular cadence with senior management and business unit leaders to advance strategy on organic technology/product development and potential acquisitions to provide clarity, alignment, and urgency around the critical initiatives across the enterprise. Participate and influence engineering, policies and procedures in cross enterprise engineering events, new product ideation events, technical conferences, and industry standards committees. 100 remote; may work from home with up to 50% domestic travel required.


Must possess at least a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent in Electrical Engineering or a related field and at least 5 years of progressive experience working in the electric power industry focused on smart grid products for substation or distribution automation. Must also possess the following: at least 5 years of experience in the areas of power systems engineering, distribution power systems protection and voltage optimization; at least 5 years of experience in the areas of high voltage switchgear and capacitor switches; at least 5 years of experience in the areas of sensors, controls, and utility communication systems; and at least 5 years of experience in roles interfacing with internal or external customers and presenting ideas, conclusions, recommendations, and clarity to diverse business audiences.
