As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and HW infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the Cloud Hardware Manufacturing Engineering (CHME) team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for seasoned engineers with a strong passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

As a Development Manager (Principal Hardware Engineer), you will work directly with PMs, cross-functional technical leads, internal customer engineering groups, Azure OS & Software, supply chain teams and silicon suppliers to deliver HW infrastructure solutions.

This Development Manager (DM) is a technical individual contributor role and involves end-to-end HW infrastructure solutions development in the Azure Systems Engineering group. To be successful at this role, candidates must have a solid and deep technical understanding of hardware, firmware, software solution stack, integration of HW/FW/OS on complex server architectures and be able to apply their knowledge/experience to solve complex technical issues, bring clarity to ambiguous technical problems, influence stakeholders on the design, and seamlessly collaborate with other technical leaders in the Azure organization.



  • Owns and drives the implementation of technical deliverables, conducts design reviews and guarantees overall system design / functionality meet product requirements.
  • identifies and drives commonality design across platforms, guides cross-functional design engineers, validation/qual engineers, OEM/ODMs and debug activities all through PLC phases.
  • Provides technical guidance and feedback into PRD, RFQs and SOW by partnering with PM.
  • Technical ownership to deliver E2E HW infrastructure rack level solution (L10/L11) and optimizes the solution for cost, performance, with RAS features, security, and safety.
  • Facilitates technical issues / decision resolution at the platform solution level.
  • Interface / coordinator with customer facing engineering groups for requirements, design dependencies and ensures compatibility with the E2E solution stack.
  • Oversee design/Implementation with ODM / SI /Silicon partners
  • Owns and drives cost rationalization / reconciliation at the component or SKU level
  • Responsible for technical review of ECO and approves them.
  • Leads defects management, technical discussions, and debug taskforces


Required Qualifications:

  • BS/MS in Electrical/Computer Engineering/ Computer Science or equivalent experience.
  • 12+ years of hands-on experience in server systems architecture, design, development with solid understanding of hardware, firmware, software and OS interfaces in enterprise or cloud segments.
  • Experienced in leading debugging complex system level issues and providing recommendations on potential fixes/tradeoffs to meet business needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Current function as a Development Manager or a Sr. Platform Technical Lead role for Enterprise or Cloud Scale Platforms.
  • Technical Leader in Server Industry with experience Enterprise/Cloud Server architecture and hardware designs, integration of IP features with clear understanding of HW/FW/OS interactions, expertise in Server Platform Performance characterization & optimizations and RAS features architecture/integration.
  • Strong technical communication skills (verbal and written) to interface with cross-functional technical leads within and/or outside of the organization.
  • Self-Starter and ability to influence design and develop optimal HW infrastructure solutions for scale, leadership performance, reliability, availability, and security.
  • Experience in working under tight schedules, owning and managing the technical readiness of the program, and working through ambiguity.
