The Azure Platform Architecture team is looking for a Director of Mechanical & Thermal Architecture to help lead our platform and infrastructure roadmap. We are looking for a candidate with experience in complex mechanical and thermal system designs to drive industry leading solutions for AI/ML, GPU, Storage, Compute, and Edge solutions. The candidate should have experience managing and leading hardware engineering teams with a proven track record of delivering leading edge infrastructure combined with business acumen, organizational skills, culture and change management experience with the ability to execute in a fast-paced environment.

The Azure Platform Architecture team is part of a broader hardware and infrastructure organization known as CHIE. Microsoft Cloud Hardware Infrastructure Engineering (CHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. CHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Skype, OneDrive and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. This role in the U.S. is up to 100% remote.



This leadership role will require you to drive innovation, partnerships, and development:

  • Organizational Leadership – manage, lead, grow, and mentor an outstanding team of engineers across mechanical, thermal, power, and infrastructure disciplines.
  • Technology Leadership – Drive concepts and definition for industry leading designs and platforms spanning GPU, Compute, Storage, HPC, etc.
  • Technology Partnerships – build strong relationships with our technology and development partners to drive leading edge innovation into our next generation products.
  • Customer Focus – partner across Microsoft teams and collaborate to deliver industry leading products.
  • Drive Clarity - Distill and articulate architectural tradeoffs encompassing mechanical, power, and thermal inputs in terms of key metrics such as TCO, performance, schedule and risk.
  • Industry Influence - Drive and influence technology providers and design partners towards optimal components and solutions to meet the future requirements for Azure’s infrastructure.


Required Qualifications:

  • B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or equivalent industry experience.
  • 12+ years of mechanical, thermal, power, or system design experience.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with executives and technology leaders inside and outside of Microsoft.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years team management experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in complex mechanical and thermal system designs. in one or more of the following: GPU, storage, rack and power architecture, etc.
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and a passion for challenging the status quo. Consistently drive disruptive innovation.
  • Ability to analyze architecture solutions from a full TCO pe including but not limited to COGS, CAPEX, Power, and other system cost constraints.
  • Strong communication skills to influence and partner across many facets of the Azure hardware and engineering teams.

The salary for this role in the state Colorado is between $171,200 and $256,800.

In addition, certain roles also have the opportunity to earn sales incentives based on revenue or utilization, depending on the terms of the plan and the employee’s role.
