The Microsoft Datacenter Development Environmental Permitting team supports the development and delivery of Microsoft’s datacenter portfolio from site selection through design, construction and operation. The MS datacenter development portfolio consists of complex, multi-disciplinary, large scale, multi-year datacenter construction and lease projects.

Microsoft is looking for a Global Land Development Organization (LDO) Environmental COE (Centre of Excellence) Lead to drive the development and execution of environmental permitting strategies for the lifecycle delivery of datacenter development. The Global LDO Environmental CEO will be a key contributor in leading the global new region regulatory reviews, developing environmental programs from site selection through environmental permitting and compliance, and developing key partnerships with internal and external stakeholders This role will require regular engagement with key Microsoft stakeholders.


The successful candidate will:

  • Develop and manage LDO Environmental Programs and Strategy globally supporting Microsoft datacenter development and delivery through site selection, environmental due diligence, permitting and compliance.
  • Work with internal stakeholders for the continued development of comprehensive environmental due diligence, risk evaluation, and permitting programs
  • Coordinate with key internal and external counterparts to execute effective permitting, regulatory, and risk evaluation strategies for new geographies
  • Represent Microsoft in engagement with relevant authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ), external stakeholders, and the public to address potential risks and facilitate on-time datacenter delivery.
  • Develop environmental strategy and policy programs to support future datacenter development and operations.
  • Leverage technical expertise to provide support to internal Microsoft stakeholders during development of new initiatives, designs, and programs.
  • Initiate and lead the development of new region environmental and permitting strategy
  • Communicate environmental requirements and provide environmental expertise to diverse internal stakeholders, including legal, end-to-end, land acquisition, land development, energy, design, construction, operations, community development, CELA and sustainability teams.
  • The Global LDO Environmental COE will maintain and report Environmental Program status regularly and contribute to the development and continued improvement of an Environmental Excellence program for datacenter delivery and operations.



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental, Civil, or Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or equivalent
  • 10+ years of environmental permitting and approvals experience Globally, including management of environmental impact assessments, acquisition of permits, new region regulatory reviews, cultural and ecological surveys and approvals, and environmental programs development.
  • 5+ years conducting environmental due diligence and risk assessments for greenfield and brownfield sites, including environmental site assessments and remediation.
  • Experience with mission critical facilities or large-scale construction projects
  • Ability to establish and maintain cross-functional and positive working relationships with internal and external teams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, attention to detail and high standards for quality of deliverables.


  • Proficiency in multiple languages
  • Community Engagement and Stakeholder engagement experience
