Senior Editorial Lead, Large Merchant (Remote, Americas)

Location: Remote - Global

Job Type: Full time

Company Description

About Shopify

Opportunity is not evenly distributed. Shopify puts independence within reach for anyone with a dream to start a business. Since 2006, we’ve grown to over 10,000 employees and generated over $500 billion in sales for millions of merchants in 175 countries. Every 28 seconds, an entrepreneur on Shopify makes their first sale.

This is life-defining work that directly impacts people’s lives as much as it transforms your own. This is putting the power of the few in the hands of the many, is a future with more voices rather than fewer, and is creating more choices instead of an elite option.

About you

Moving at our pace brings a lot of change, complexity, and ambiguity—and a little bit of chaos. Shopifolk thrive on that and are comfortable being uncomfortable. That means Shopify is not the right place for everyone.

Before you apply, consider if you can:

  • Care deeply about what you do and about making commerce better for everyone
  • Excel by seeking professional and personal hypergrowth
  • Keep up with an unrelenting pace (the week, not the quarter)
  • Be resilient and resourceful in face of ambiguity and thrive on (rather than endure) change
  • Bring critical thought and opinion — and embrace differences and disagreement to get shit done and move forward
  • Work digital-first for your daily work

Job Description

Shopify's Content & SEO team helps shepherd these stories of independence across our owned and organic channels. As the Sr. Editorial Lead, you'll define the roadmaps, strategies, and goals for our key large merchant audiences and product lines. You’ll also serve as leader, mentor, and coach to a team of editors and content marketers, providing the right balance of structure and process to help the team operate efficiently at scale.

As a representative of the editorial craft at Shopify, you’ll also contribute to and champion our editorial and style guidelines, liaising with appropriate stakeholders to ensure we maintain a high bar for publishing. You bring a deep familiarity with publishing production and operations best practices, intellectual curiosity and editorial rigor, and previous experience in B2B content marketing leadership.

Want to learn more? Here are a few details around what it takes to be successful in this role:

What you'll be responsible for:

  • Build efficient and effective publishing programs that drive aggressive growth. In partnership with the Editorial Lead for Standard Merchant Acquisition, you’ll create interlocked content calendars across the Plus, Merchant Services, and Retail business lines. In partnership with our Revenue Marketing organization, you’ll deliver on robust integrated content campaigns that directly contribute to pipeline growth. As this is a nascent area of the business, you’ll also work to better understand the per asset ROI and therefore right mix of content types per campaign, empowering your teams to be better partners to their fellow product marketing and integrated marketing managers.
  • Grow a talent-dense editorial team. Your management experience and high quality bar makes you the ideal person to hire and lead our in-house editors and content marketers, ensuring they have a clear vision, ambitious goals, and ample opportunities for impact. Your previous experience ensures you know how to gain maximum leverage with the right mix of in-house and agency / freelancer talent while upholding the same editorial standards across contributors. You seek opportunities for team efficiency gains while never sacrificing relationships, trust, standards, or editorial integrity.
  • Shape and scale content deliverables at a large scale and with wide scope. This role is like the COO for large merchant editorial; your background includes operational experience including testing into zero-to-one initiatives, understanding when and how to scale profitable programs, managing budget, and organizing a complex central calendar for myriad stakeholders to access as required. You’ll establish baseline reporting in partnership with our Content Management and Data teams; you’ll also implement and manage ongoing performance and business impact reporting, instilling this rigor in your team as well. You possess the ability to quickly identify various dependencies and create the right connective tissue to ensure no loss of service; you can work at both the 30,000 foot view but can zoom in–fast–to identify and articulate when there are opportunities to improve the quality of our work. You will set and hold that quality bar for editorial across the team, facilitating feedback loops and setting checkpoints to ensure all requirements and approvals are met, every time.
  • Develop strong partnerships with our Revenue and Product Marketing organizations. Our company’s mission is to make commerce better for everyone. With that in mind, we need to work across organizations to ensure we deliver the right–and best–experience for our merchants. You’re comfortable working on a team that’s inspired by insight but guided by data. You know how to collaborate across various team types, own high-stakes conversations, and navigate relationships with stakeholders and senior leaders in order to drive favorable business outcomes. You’re comfortable orienting teams around common rallying cries, able to distill complicated systems and processes into clear action items and next steps, and know how to deliver constructive feedback in order to keep teams moving towards building a better Shopify for all.

  • Experience in previous leadership positions. You must have extensive and proven experience hiring, coaching, and leading first-class writers and editors at publications with high editorial standards. You have a personal leadership philosophy and strong opinions on building great teams that you can articulate to other leaders. You have built teams from scratch but have also stepped into a variety of different leadership roles where there have been existing teams. You know how to adapt and flex as required.
  • Experience in a Deputy Editor role or a rough equivalent. Bonus if you’ve worked at a technology company. You can speak confidently about past successes developing roadmaps, workflows, calendars, and KPIs that have helped 10+ person editorial teams achieve great things.
  • Experience with B2B marketing. You work in service of your readers. We expect a deep level of empathy for our merchants, which manifests in an authentic and bespoke editorial experience per audience segment. You have playbooks for building and scaling streamlined processes to deliver editorial work spanning across asset types, including: blog posts, case studies, white papers, ebooks, downloadable guides / checklists, research reports, data stories, and more. Not required, but experience managing on a global scale is a plus.
