My husband and I always wanted our children to be close in age. We knew it would be a strain on our finances for a couple of years especially as we were buying our forever home at the time. So the introduction of the new very generous parental leave policy just before my second maternity leave was such a relief. It meant the financial burden that mat leave can typically represent had suddenly disappeared. I could finally look forward to spending some time with my second daughter during the first few months of her life without the worry of being able to afford it as well as our mortgage.
