Our Submarines Business
Our Submarines business has been safely delivering world class submarines to the UK Royal Navy for more than a century.
The Astute class will equip the Royal Navy with its largest and most capable generation of attack submarines. We are responsible for the design, build, test and commissioning of these state-of-the-art vessels. In total, seven boats will make up the fleet, each weighing a mighty 7,400 tonnes.
Dreadnought is the successor to the Vanguard class of nuclear deterrent submarines. We will deliver four submarines to the Royal Navy, with the first submarine entering service in the early 2030s. Dreadnought is widely considered to be one of the world's most complex engineering challenges.

Principal Manufacturing Engineer MBP (Build Planner)
Would you like to play a key role within the manufacturing engineering Dreadnought programme team? We currently have a vacancy for a Principal Manufacturing Engineer MBP at our site in Barrow-in-Furness.
As a Principal Manufacturing Engineer MBP, you will be working alongside our Engineering, Operations and Supply Chain functions, responsible for converting design intent of the submarine into a manageable sequence of work.
This role will provide you with the chance to work on one of the most exciting and challenging products in industry, playing a significant role in the support to the construction of the nation's nuclear deterrent submarine programme of the present and future. Future career progression opportunities could include development into a Senior Build Planner position, or opportunities within the wider Engineering or Operations functions.
Your main responsibilities as a Principal Manufacturing Engineer MBP will involve:
- Transferring the engineering design intent into executable packages of work to create detailed sequence plans for operations to execute
- Seeking to enrich the manufacturing process
- Applying working knowledge of product design and assembly to the manufacturing process
- Being involved in new business transition using new ideas and methodologies on the way of the business plans
Your skills and qualifications:
Experience in leading large teams on a complex project
Planning Experience
SAP/ Team Centre experience
Evidence of developing innovative and effective solutions to a range of build delivery issues via the effective utilisation of the relevant manufacturing engineering disciplines and methodologies
Evidence of developing optimal manufacturing workflows and packages using manufacturing engineering disciplines, exploiting and leveraging business systems
Degree in a relevant engineering discipline and/or experience of working in a manufacturing engineering discipline
Previous experience in performance management and leading a team

You will have excellent people skills, helping to network with a wide range of stakeholders, showing effective management and demonstrating a calm but assertive approach.
Furthermore, you will have proven decision making skills, taking a logical approach to reach decisions that are both pragmatic and practical in order to maintain progress and alignment with longer term strategic business objectives.
